Many thanks for all your help and suggestions. Am now off to talk to some more of the family.

One more thing. Is it possible to view certificates in the public record office if the reference is known??

thanks and regards
Heather

Hi Heather

Let us know if the certificate does turn out to be the right one. It did occur to me that Mary Jane might have been married before.

As others have said - if it isn't the right cert - your grandfather's birth certificate would be your next best port of call.

And in answer to your question you can't view certificates, sadly have to order them. If you knew the church they married in someone might be able to check the Parish Registers for you.

Good luck and keep us posted

Jan ;)

Hi there,
Sorry its been such a long time in getting back with the answer to this, but we've all been ill - you know whats its like this time of year - but today I've finally got my grandfathers birth certificate, and his mothers name was in fact Jennie.

Back to the proverbial grindstone now!
Many thanks to all
Heather

My mother was born Jane but was always known as Jenny. I've met a Mary or two who turned out to be Margarets. All it took at a marriage was for the woman to report her "use" name rather than her given name, and Bob's your uncle. Bob would still be your uncle if a mother reported her "use" name on her child's birth certificate. No-one ever asked for evidence.

I know it sounds strange but do you know when she died as the death cert might give a clue somewhere, birth date etc to verify in census.or even a death entry gives a age.

So was this the right marriage? If so getting this cert will give their fathers names and occupations and b a first step towards going back another generation

Yes, I strongly suspect that it was the same one. I'm doing a bit of general investigation on ancestry beforehand (except the sites down right now!) before I order it but I'm pretty certain its right.
