Salford photographs?
« on: Friday 24 October 08 13:15 BST (UK) »
Hi

These photos are of my great grandfather, John Bradbury (b. 1868) in Salford.  In the pub photo, he is the big man sitting on the right in the front row and in the other he is the man (with a cigar?) standing closest to the man sitting (in a railway carriage?)
In 1891 he was living in Regent Road, Salford, and in 1901 he was the owner of a pub/hotel in King's Street, Salford.  I'm not sure when he died, but may have been in the 1910s or 1020s.
Do you know where these photos were taken?  Do you know the pub?  And when were they taken?  Do you know who the other men in the photos might be?

Many thanks

Fiona

There is also another photo.   This time, John Bradbury is standing on the right.  Where was this taken?  As far as I know he had nothing to do with the sea.

Here's a pic of my great great uncle in about 1900. He was in the Royal Navy - and this photo is labelled HMS Locust in Malta.    All dressed in white (presumably hot weather uniform) and very similar hats to the one in yours.   Uniforms slightly different (My man was chief artificer in the engine room) but perhaps your chap was a higher ranking officer.  They are wearing naval hats in all the pictures so I'd say there must be some kind of naval link there...

Is the pub in the photo definitely in Salford?

There is a photo here
http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/photodb/wc2249.htm

of an Invercauld Arms in Scotland. Although the sign in the photo is much higher up, the text "font" looks similar, as does the texture of the wall.

Could be a possibility.

Yes i have to agree with SKB , i too think the pub could well be on in Scotland. There are a couple of pubs with the same name in Scotland.

I have looked at all the trade directory's i have for Manchester/Salford and there does not appear to be any pubs with the name " Invercauld " or any combination of the name in the Manchester/Salford area.
Your chap seems to be some sort of naval personnel, maybe on a passenger of merchant ships? Have you tried looking for any records of him been in the merchant navey on the national archives site or other MN site? So the pictures could be anywhere?

Just out of interest.
The pub on King street between Grave lane & Stephens street was this one above. I found it on the 1929 directory.
