Huntingdon Road.
« on: Monday 27 October 08 22:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
Can I ask if anyone would know what was at 75 Huntingdon Road, York, my time frame is 1926-1930. Is there a chance that it was a hospital, as I have both a birth and death at the same address, the parents didnt live at Huntingdon Road, so I was just wondering.

Many thanks in advance.
Anne.

Hi anner,

The only thing I can tell you is that it is part of what is known as Wray's Cottages behind was a brickworks, so I can only asume that they were part of that for the work people.
I didn't come here to live until 69 and as far as I am aware the brickworks was shut then.

Hi Anne,

There is a thread on the East Yorkshire board about this address and it seems to be the York workhouse. (I would put a link to the thread but I've forgotten how to)

In reference to the last message, there were 2 places on Huntington Rd that could have been big enough for Workhouses, one near York that was called White Cross Hospital and the other further away that was a occupational area, unless the numbers were changed before 1897 75 is still Wray's Cottages, try Google.

Thanks Becky and Bee,
Thanks for your input I will look up on google. The only reason I was asking is that the usual residence was Beedhams Court. But couldnt work out what was at Huntingdon Road, and wondered if it was a hospital or something similar.

Regards
Anne.

Hi Anne

Have a look at this site
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/
click 'workhouse locations' on the lefthand side, then click 'Yorkshire'

An interesting site even if it's not connected to your family.

I think it may have been the Wokhouse later to become the Grange Hospital and then St Mary's hospital, finally closed in 1979.

Just to confirm my earlier post, the following article gives the address of the workshouse as "75 Huntington Road".  This is near to Haley's Terrace end of Huntington Road.  The building is still there and is now student accommodation I believe.

Hi Bee and Pinetree,
I will certainly look at all the links and see what I can find for the dates. The really interesting thing is that I have a name of E. Jenner, Occupier on the birth cert.
I know that my rellies were living at Beedhams Court, as it give usual residence as that and ties in with other certificates that I have.
Off to look at links now.

Many Thanks
Anne.
