Help with place name
« on: Tuesday 28 October 08 12:51 GMT (UK) »
Was at Coleraine Library the other day, had a look at the church records for Ringsend Pres. Got lots of crawford records which was good but the place threw me a bit, king crawfords family had COOPIN whereas his sons family was Craigmore. Could be just a spelling mistake, the assistant was convinced it was Coopin as well, just wondered if anyone had heard of it before.

It was Coopin which is an area (not a townland name)- there's now a dump (with a whale buried there) in part of Coopin (which spans the present Craigmore Road)..

Thats good, never heard of it before thought they'd moved out of the area. I know they did move after 1900 (don't know where) was begining to think it was earlier.
Thank you

If you're trying to find when they left a certain townland PRONI has the valuation notebooks which follow on from Griffith's Valuation (1859) until c1920s. The various coloured inks are part of the system of recording dates and are usually very difficult to read, can't be photocopied but are well worth looking at if you get a chance.

As well as the coloured inks the enumerator often, but not always, also wrote the date alongside the revision.
