Your Henry seems too old...but was there rounding on the 1841 adults too...Henry was 30 in that so should be 1811...cant remember how old my henryor John was...should I look or  do you know something I dont?

Hi Wortle,

As well as the rounding down of ages which occurred (Adult ages - those over 15 years were rounded down in 5 year lots if the enumerator followed his instructions so listing as age 30 he would have provided an age of between 30 and 34) - the 1841 being the first to be of any real use to us, is notoriously innaccurate. I have couples who can age nearly 20 years between 1841 and 1851. I don't see another possibility. He was married in 1828 so to my mind the chap I have found seems a good match. You initially asked for one born about 1805/6

Yes, thats what I needed to know about on the rounding

I do tend to jump to conclusions and am trying to be more analytical. The later dates are more accurate and all that fits with age locality and all the rest...Are they all showing as Rattue or are the names getting indistinct etc?



Short pregnancy. First one I've noticed I expect.

(BTW if you post again and I dissapear BT are working on the line.Its all been on off since Thurs)

I saw on the last list that you knew the fathers names on the marriages, any chance therefore that you know Sophias fathers name please as per post above

Sorry fathers name were not listed at marriage until civil registration began Sep 1/4 1837.

Hi, I saw these posts and was hoping for some desperate help!!  My grandmother was a Vida Aurelia Zoe Ragless b1906, father Alfred Ragless, mother Emily Rattue, residing at 13 St Marks Road, district of Salisbury at the time of birth.  There appear to be a couple of Emily Rattues' at this time and I  have most def gotten very confused.  If you have any info on this I would be so grateful, I can find nothing on Emily Rattue or even Alfred Ragless (there also appears to be a couple of Alfreds!). 

Thanks for reading this and really hope you may be able to shed some light on this for me.

After having a bit of a play in 1911. You will need to access it yourself. Anyway by what I have worked out Alfred is from Horsham Sussex aged 36.

In 1891 he is in Horsham

I can't see any of them in 1901 nor do I see a marriage although an Alfred RAGLESS Does marry in Horsham in 1896 - possible wives are not Emily Jane. 

I find an eldest child Reginald Frank aged 10 looks like listing as b Hampshire. (Nearest I can come is a Reginald Frank RATTUE born in Salisbury Mar 1/4 1902) Also other children listed in 1911 as born Hampshire, Wiltshire and Buckinghamshire. They are in Eton District Bucks in 1911. They certainly got about.

I have just been on the 1911 site and am very excited, there is my grandmother!  Im glad im not the only one having had trouble finding marriage details, its all very strange??? I also have info on Ragless of Horsham which again confuses things, I think Alfred married in his twenties and then his wife died and he remarried Emily but again, im stull hunting for this info!!  THANK YOU so much!
