Phil:

Many, many thanks for all this.  It doesn't help me narrow it down I don't think, but it is a mine of information that I would never have found for myself.

It also makes for fascinating reading.

As for the cwgc site - I couldn't find any obvious candidates for my Gordon, knowing he survived the first world war.

Hello Linda,

Do you know for certain that he was in the army?

Although he may not have gone overseas, at all, or before the Armistice, unless you know otherwise, he may have been in the Merchant or Royal Navy. This could explain why he is on the Absent Voters lists for so long.
Are there any clues on the A V lists?

Oh my, why didn't I think of that :-[?

I just assumed he was in the army - I found all his details on the National Archives site under the Royal Navy Section.  Brilliant - thank you so much for the suggestion!

Of course this now leads to more questions!  He signed on in 1917 for 12 years, but was discharged in 1924 for what looks like medical reasons.  I'm finding the words hard to read - can I post it here for others to have a go at?

Thanks, think I will.

I've found a death reg. for a Gordon Hunter 2 1/4 1924 (he was discharged in June 1924), age 25, in Alverstoke district. Right age, close to Portsmouth etc. I'm thinking could be him!
