I got the report from Erica, and basically she agrees with you - James (1890) simply got the names of his grandparents wrong on his birth certificate. James (1856)'s parents were John Graham  - who sadly died in the Crichton - and Margaret Wilson  - who remarried a Thomas Jamieson (grocer) after John's death.

Sadly my line is not following the route I thought. Erica has John's parents as James Graham and Mary - we don't know her maiden name. - both born c 1796 probably in Tundergarth.

So it is back to the drawing board because I had Francis and Mary Bell as his parents. Oh to have an unusual surname! Mind you - it's better than BROWN - which is my husband's!!

Sounds like you are making some headway  :)

Any joy in finding a marriage cert for James and Janet Ann  ::)  Also, have you tried searching for John Graham's death cert to see what info that may contain (although if he died away from home, parents' details may not have been known to the informant).

Sandra

You have an 1855 birth for an unnamed child for John Graham and Margaret Wilson:

1. GRAHAM Male Birth: 20 SEP 1855 Middlebie
2. JAMES GRAHAM Birth: 30 AUG 1856 Middlebie
3. JOHN GRAHAMBirth: 12 MAY 1859 Middlebie
4. THOMAS GRAHAM Birth: 21 MAR 1862 Middlebie

If you haven't already viewed the cert on SP, might be worthwhile you having a look. 1855, the first year of official reg. in Scotland and entries ran over two pages of the register. Should include where and when parents' married, where they were born, how many children they'd had (alive/deceased) etc.

I assume this may the entry for possible parents showing for John, from the 1841 Census:

James Graham 45, H L W Cotton
Mary Graham 45
John Graham 15
Mary Graham 14

Address: Eaglesfield, Middlebie

Which would then connect perhaps with this 1851 entry for John and Margaret, with his sister Mary living with them:

John Graham 27, weaver, b. Hoddam
Margaret Graham 26, wife b. Applegarth
William Graham 2, son b Middlebie
Mary Graham 24, sister, b. Hoddam
Robert Irving 1 Month, nephew, b. Middlebie

Address: Eaglesfield, Middlebie

And the family in 1861 after James' birth - all the children born in Middlebie:

John Graham 37, weaver, b. Hoddam
Margaret Graham 36, wife b. Applegarth
William Graham 12
Archibald Graham 8
James Graham 4
John Graham 2

Address: Springkell Lodge, Middlebie

Wow! Thanks - yes, this is James' family. Sadly neither I nor the researcher from the Ewart have been able to find a marriage cert for James & Janet Ann - I have the date from James' birth info.
Because John died in the Crichton his death cert has no family info on it at all - father unknown/ mother unknown etc.

The only thing I can suggest to you at this stage is to try and trace the James' sister Mary and hopefully verify parents names. There are bound to be other siblings....we just don't know who they are at this point!
