Bromley, Hawkesworth Road
« on: Sunday 02 November 08 00:08 GMT (UK) »
I am attempting to locate Hawkesworth Road c1880s in Bromley.  Old-Maps show nothing near the old town centre.  Googling brings nothing to light except a Nat Archives reference to Deeds on property on the Road but not at #16 (the address of interest) - so it did exist at some time??

Thanks for any help.

Hi GrantGen

In the 1881 census, the route taken by the enumerator shows ..............

41 Ravensbourne Road, Bromley (St Peter & St Paul)
Odd numbers of Hawkesworth Road (1-11)
Even numbers of Hawkesworth Road (2-12) then numbers 13-15
1 Simpson's Road

Does that help?

Casalguidi :)

Thank you Casalguidi your reply is a great help in finding 16 Hawkesworth Road, Bromley, Kent.  1881 Census of my GGrandfather William GRANT and household.

Road no longer exist, but the location can be speculated upon based on:
1. The 1881 Census enumerators route which was along Ravensbourne, Hawkesworth and Simpson's Roads;
2. 1896 map and subsequent maps.

Hawkesworth Rd is under the existing building complex between the RR tracks, Simpson's Road, Mason Hill and Westmoreland Rd.

See here for illustration

Note: Most c1880s roads in this area still exist. However, Simpson's Rd is only in the same area, but not the same route. And the area in question was not developed until after 1872 as no road appear on the 1872 OLD-Map.

Thanks again
Tom

Hi Tom

Yes, it would make sense to be the little road without a name on that map.

Bromley Local Studies have large scale ordnance survey maps which should show Hawkesworth Road in a larger scale if they have one in the correct timescale http://www.bromley.gov.uk/libraries/librariesintheborough/local_studies_library.htm

Local town/street directories are also good as they often show placements of road junctions among the lists of residents.
