Hello Anthony & Suz,

Crumbs Suz....that's brilliant stuff!  ;D
Here are a couple of things to help you along.

A couple of baptisms from the Notts FHS index;

Mansfield St Peter – parents, Walter John & Laura E Mary Kent.
Sydney Tom Kent – 18th July 1896, fathers occupation; Piano dealer,  Leeming St, Mansfield
Edna Mary Kent – 19th October 1897, fathers occupation; Pianoforte dealer,  Leeming St, Mansfield

Marriage - Nottingham St Mary, 6th March 1890
Walter John Kent & Laura Elizabeth Mary Holmes

Sheila.

We are quite happy to check the census for you - but you do need "key " certificates to confirm  we have the correct family

I am having difficulty tracing Walter pre 1881 - there are a couple of possiblities

Maybe if you purchase the marriage certificate of Walter John and laura Elizabeth M that would be a good idea.

That would give fathers names and occupations of bride and groom -and witnesses sometimes are related.

Do you have the marriage cert for Reginald - if so what were the witnesses names???

You can look on the 1881 census free at family search -maybe look for laura Elizabeth holmes????

you can also look at www.historical directories .com free to see if the kents and Coopers are listed in businesses

there is also the IGI on family search for bmds - but mainly they are earlier records -so when you have got a little further back you can look at that.

If you are in nottingham you can go to the library records office/archives and look at parish recordsmarriages etc.

At your local library you can use Ancestry.com free - so you could check the censusetc which I have given to you - you would be able to print the census details out - which are always nice to have for your records

oops-forgot- you can order certificates on line from the GRO (General register Office) You need the reference no -volume and page -which I have given you - but look them up yourself to check on FreeBMD -this will also get you used to using the sites.

If you contact Nottingham register office to order the certificate you will not need the ref nos -just the quarter year and name/s.
The register office does not accept payment over the phne you will need to write in enclosing chequepostal order -or if you re able you can visit in person.

If you decide to use the GRO and need talking though the prceedure -please ask

Certificates cost £7 each

BMD registration/certificates are available from Sept qtr 1837 when registation began. (although registration was not compulsory in the early years)

Just start piecing together the information you have and then we can get help you to get back further.

RootsChatters are a friendly bunch and very willing to assist - between all of us we have lots of information -never be afraid to ask for a look up - or advice - we all enjoy helping out .

IApologies as I omitted welcoming you to the site

So a BIG HELLO and welcome from me

You can use the GRO -they delver to Oz - just takes longer.

meanwhile I will look up Laura's family.

and I will ask my Auntie (she's 89) if she remembers kent and Cooper music stores in Nottingham/mansfield area. She may remember as she was/is a pianist
