Hello,

Only 3 McGinn families in Sotland on the '81 census which have a William born 5 years either side of 1865.  only one with a mother Mary.  Hopefully 'your' man was a carpenter or wright?

Hi Linda

Just adding a link to your previous post so that people don't repeat some of the searches that have already been done  :)

Linda

Did you ever order that marriage cert. for William and Harriet to confirm father's name and occupation?

Certainly that 1864 birth in Ayrshire is the most obvious one, specially with the John for middle name given that William shows as William J. Mcguin in 1901.

That 1864 birth cert in Scotland for William would also include details of where and when parents married. If they married in Ireland it may well give a clue as to where in Ireland they may be from.

Apart from that 1861 census entry that Trish found previously with Mary and two of the children, the family seem to disappear until 1901...or at least I can't see them as yet  :-\

Linda

Looking at the McGinn entries in 1861 Stevenson where some of John and Mary Ann's children show as born, it almost looks like John McGinn may have been over working as a miner with potentially his parents and at least one or morebrothers living nearby. This is my interpretation only, but I'll list the households and you can see the similarities:

Maryanne McGinn 40 head, (wife) of a collier, b. Ireland
Patrick McGinn    6, b. Stevenson
Hugh McGinn 1, b Stevenson

Address: No 57, Stevenson

Peter McGinn 67, collier, b Ireland
Agnes McGinn 65, b. Ireland
Hugh McGinn 22, son, collier, b. Ireland
Elinor Boyle 9, boarder, b Glasgow
Samuel Chalmers 21, boarder, b. Glasgow

Address: No 79, Stevenson

Patrick McGinn    26, collier, b. Ireland
Christina McGinn 22, b. Stevenson
Patrick McGinn    2 Mo , b. Stevenson

Address: No 59, Stevenson

Patrick McGinn    38, collier, b. Ireland
Margaret McGinn 36, b. Glasgow
Daniel McGinn 17, b. Rutherglen
Patrick McGinn 11, b. Old Monkland
John McGinn 6, b. Old Monkland
Margaret McGinn 2, b. Renfrew
Hugh McGinn 1 Month, b. Stevenson

Address: No 49, Stevenson

I can't find any of them after this 1861 census, so where did the families go I wonder. Back to Ireland may be the most obvious thought given that we can't find William John b. 1864 until his entry with mother and new family in 1901 Durham.
