Hi Shirlann,
I suggest you will get more information by spelling the word "Boer".

I have had some help from the following site the National Archives of South Africa.
http://www.national.archives.gov.za/

they were able to send me a printout of the death cert of a relation.
Good Luck

If the kind Moderator moves this to the South Africa board, you'll get help there.

The good news - the SA records are good, if a bit slow.

Hi Shirlann
What was the name of your Ancestor?  I know the Bloemfontein Archieves do have a lot of records.  That would be VAB as a reference on National Archieves.
If is it a VAB  ref I will go and have a look for you, as I must go next weekend to look up some files for someone else.  I don't charge anything!  Just do it for the love of it.
Please let me know.
Kind regards
Delva

Hi there

I have just found this site today and its fabulous!

Anyway, I was hoping Delva that you (or anyone else) may be able to help me with any information on my grandfather who fought in the Boer War.  His name was Francis Tucker (although I believe he was know as Frank and apparently he was with a detachment called Brabants Horse.

I am just looking for any information I can find on this - any records at all.

Id be most grateful

Thanks

Michelle

May I suggest that your first action should be to purchase a small book called "The Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902" by Phil Toamselli, published by the Federation of Family History Societies, ISBN 1 86006 197 4 and costing £4.95?  It is the best money I have spent for a year or three and it is full of 'where to find what you are looking for'.

One of the publications Phil recommends is, "The colonials in South Africa", the full text of which is at: http://www.archive.org/stream/colonialsinsouth00stiruoft/colonialsinsouth00stiruoft_djvu.txt

You might also have a look at: http://www.pinetreeweb.com/perspectives.htm

That should give you a start!  Do feel free to come back to me.  I am no expert but my grandfather fought with 1st Kitchener Fighting Scouts and I have now found his Attestation Papers and know where he fought and what actions he was probably involved in!

Hi Malcolm,
Thank you so much for that information.
Unfortunately I do not know the regiment or
or Grandads army number.  I was told he emigrated
with my Aunt who was very young, due to my Grandma
getting very home sick they returned home when he
was demobed.
Regards,

Shirann.

In that case you need to find out who has his medals.  His regiment & number is inscribed round the rim of his Queen's (or King's) South African Medal.

Is there any chance that he also fought in the 1st World War?  That would open up new possibilities.

Hope this helps!
