1891/1901 census look-up TURNER - COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 05 November 08 22:44 GMT (UK) »
I would like to find this Charles William Hooper in 1891 and 1901  - should read TURNER!
He was born 1888/89 in the Forest of Dean area, exact location unknown, father is Alfred, a farmer

Charles was married in 1911 in Bishopswood, Herefordshire, occupation signalman, one of the witnesses was an Edith May Turner who was probably a sibling as there is a baptism for her in 1894 in Bishopswood to an Alfred Turner, labourer, and Eliza
(I have no marriage yet for Alfred and Eliza as there are too many possibles)

The 1891 census index I looked at had an Albert Turner, wife Eliza, and children James, Jane, Jesse, Alice and Charles all born in Gloucestershire and living somewhere in Herefordshire which sounded promising
I could not find  Charles on the 1901 without knowing his birthplace, there are too many

So any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

Hi SC,

I'm a little confused about the Hooper bit, is that one of his forenames or a typo for surname Turner?

Anyway your census index stating Albert as father should read Alfred, so you may have the right family!  Here they are in full:

1891  RG12/2056 Folio 58 Page 1
6 Leys Hill, Walford, Herefordshire

TURNER
Alfred    head m 45  General Laborer  Miserdon Gloucestershire
Eliza      wife  m 38                              Stanway         "
James    son      13 Farm Laborer
Jane      dau      11
Jesse     son       8  Scholar

Here's the family in 1901, different birthplace for Charles:

RG13/2475 Folio 75 Page 2
Leys Hill House, Walford, Herefordshire

TURNER
Alfred  head m 55 General Labourer  Miserden Glos
Eliza    wife  m 48                Stapway  Glos
Jesse   son   s  18 Agriculturer Labourer  Deerhurst Glos
Charlie   "         12 School Boy    Berkeley Glos
Harry      "          9      "               Walford Herefordshire
Mary     dau       6                             "              "

Do you think your marriage witness Edith May could be this Mary?
The Ross registration district covers Walford
Jun 1894  Ross    6a   423
Turner    Edith May

1881 they are in Deerhurst with Alfred b. Painswick & Eliza b. Winchcomb http://www.rootschat.com/links/04pr/

so this marriage looks promising:
Dec 1875 Winchcombe  6a   869   TURNER Alfred to  WILLIAMS  Eliza

as does this birth for Charles, as Thornbury reg district covers Berkeley
Mar 1889 Thornbury    6a   217
 Turner    Charles William

Hope this helps,
Barbara

Hi Barbara

Thank you so much for finding the correct family of Turners despite my dyslexic mistranscriptions - it's what comes of working on several families at once and my last posting I was doing Hoopers for my husband

Yes I had intended to write Alfred as that's what is on the marriage details!!

Not only have you found me a very probable marriage for Alfred and Eliza but his family as well which is great and also more than likely Eliza's father William
The birth entry for Charles I saw on FreeBMD and thought it possible because there were very few at the right time but thought it was too far away - family said he was born in the Forest of Dean

I suspect the Mary age 6 is Edith May and a second look at the baptism record shows Leys Hill which means you have it all correct

Thank you so much for all your help, I can now piece this family together

Glad to help, do you need the earlier census?
