Thank's for your interest Monica. So good of you!
I have seen all Scot & England Census, my David Brash is definately not on any, apart from the 1851&61 in England.. I  sent for 2 death certs, including the 1874 Kensington age 30, not him!   definately my  brick wall is getting higher..  Cheers Dolly

Hi Dolly

Do you know the address of his grandmothers business in Scotland? Have you checked the actual address in the 1871 census? If you haven't then let me know and I'll see who was living there in 1871

Hi Andy, I know for sure that this Brash family lived and bred in Leith. The grandparents David & Agnes  were Grocer, wine& spirit dealers. From info I have read they seemed to do very well, but why Grandma Agnes Brash left the business to David I cannot understand as he was living in England (well definately in 1861 and he was a trainee grocer)  I found in the newspaper archive notices that David H. was left the business about1869..so assume this was still in Leith.. I have Ancestry and have followed all possible leads to no end as to what happened to him after 1861..  There was still quite a few of the daughters & families of David & Agnes left in Leith in all the later  census'...
In 1851 the GP's were at 17 Coathill Leith...   Thanks anyway, Dolly

Hi Dolly

I just registered on SP using my current email and a different user name. I got a message in red that the email was already in use but immediately below and to the left was a message alongside a little box that says I acknowledge that this is a duplicate email address and wish to proceed Tick the box and hit register again,  you should now get through. The email reponses with password etc were in my inbox immediately.

You do have to make sure that the user name you use hasn't already been used by yourself or someone else.

Once you are on SP then it might be worthwhile downloading the will of Agnes Brash. Its 11 pages and can be downloaded to your computer for 5GDP (you cannot use credits to purchase wills). Also there is the Inventory which costs a further 5GDP. If David was left the business in the will then with a bit of luck there may be an address for him (or at least a location) that might help with tracking him down. Also it should have the address of the business.

Andy

:o I think I may have found David in 1871, with the surname mis-transcibed, I'll leave the transcription as is:

David Brack 26, boarder, gracer, b. Leith North
David Steel 47, Boiler Maker , b. Min Leith, Dalkeitt
Margaret Lew Steel 47m b. Fifeshire, Scoorni
William Steel 10, b. Leith, South
Thomas Steel 9, b. Leith North
Margaret Steel 5, b. Leith North

Address: 16 Sandport Street, Leith North

Oh the joy of transcriptions  ::). I think this may be him in 1881 under BRAND:

David Brand 34, butcher, b. Leith
Charlotte Brand 30, b. Leith
John H Brand 1, b. Leith

Address: No 2 Shop Tennant Street, Leith

Monica

Still under Brand for 1891 - everyone born in Leith:

David Brand 42, Gasfitter's Labourer
Charlotte Brand 41
John Brand 12
Cath Brand 10
Thos Brand 4

Address: 10 Brickwork Close, Leith

Maybe David and Charlotte had died by 1901? This is the closest I can see for younger children in 1901:

Catherine Brand 19, So. Leith
Thomas Brand 13, So. Leith
John Cousins 50, boiler maker, So. Leith
Isabella Cousins 46, So. Leith
Emaly Cousins 23
Mary Cousins 16
Thomas Cousins 18

Address: 44 Kirkgate, Leith

:'( Just checked the marriage cert for David Brand and Charlotte Ross and not your man Dolly, different parents.

Don't know what to think now  :-\ Do we have the right David as BRACK in 1871 showing as a Grocer (Gracer) and then trip on to another David BRAND in 1881 onwards...I can see a David BRANT with parents Alexander and Elizabeth (as per the MC) in 1861.

Hello

I promised myself I wasn't going to get involved in this thread.  Dolly D- you have to get access to SP....  :O)  There are a number of wills on SP for your Brashes - the grandparents David and Agness for example.  They cost £5 each. There are also some very short articles on http://edu.archive.scotsman.com/   for them - mainly due to death.  Make sure to tick the 'exact phrase' box following the initial search.

I take it the grandparents were David Brash and Agnes Henderson,.

From the IGI - all born North Leith, Midlothian to the above couple:

Magdalene ch.  12 Feb 1832
Alexander ch 07 Feb 1930
David  Brash ch 02 Apr 1826
Elizabeth ch.  08 Mar 1828
Margaret ch. 06 Jan 1822

Off to check the 41 census   :O)
