Hi Bankie

Harry is one of those names with a common variant, in this case Henry.  This looks a possibility for James' birth:

JAMES KANE  Birth:  11 JAN 1856 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Parents:HENRY KANE and MARY MCCALLUM

No other children show to this set of parents on IGI.

Again, to do with variants, this time with the surname  ::), I think in some entries the family may be down as KEAN. There is this 1861 entry:

Henry Kean 40, cement lab., b. Glasgow
Mary Kean 36, b. Mearns, Renfrewshire
Henry Kean 12, b. Glasgow
Mary Kean 10, b. Glasgow
Margaret Kean 7, b. Glasgow
James Kean 5, b. Glasgow
John Kean 2, b. East Kilbride

Address: New Road, East Kilbride

A couple of IGI entries under KEAN, parents Henry and Mary MCCALLUM:

1. JOHN KEAN  Birth: 31 JUL 1858 East Kilbride, Lanark
2. ELIZABETH KEAN Birth: 23 AUG 1863 Bridgeton, Glasgow

Other census entries, starting with the 1851:

Henry Kean 27, coal carter, b. Bridgeton Glasgow
Mary Kean 26. b. Barby (?spl), Lanark
Sarah Kean 3, b. Bridgeton Glasgow
Henry Kean 2, b. Bridgeton Glasgow
Mary Kean 3 Months,
Sarah Kean 12, niece, b. Cotton (Calton?) Lanark

Address: 140 Dalmarnock Road, Calton Glasgow

And in 1871 and the family by now in Dumbartonshire it would seem:

Henry Kane 52, lab., b. Glasgow
Mary Kane 47, b. Kilbride, Renfrewshire
James Kane 15, lab., b. Glasgow
John Kane 12, lab., Kilbride, Renfrewshire
Margaret Kane 7, b. Glasgow
Elizabeth Kane 7, b. Glasgow

Address: Old St, Old Kirkpatrick Dumbartonshire

Can't easily see Henry in 1841, but this is a possible in 1841 for niece Sarah who shows living with the family in the 1851 census.

John Kean 25, cotton spinner b. Ireland
Sarah Kean 25, b. Ireland
Sarah Kean, 3, b. Lanarkshire
Margret Kean 6 Months, b. Lanarkshire

Address: Dalmarnock Road, Barony Glasgow

With a name as Henry Kean/Kane I'd be open minded that even though Henry put Glasgow as birth place it may actually have been Ireland, or certainly parents' origins may have been Irish.

Just found this entry, as a possible for Henry in 1841 - I'll leave the transcription as is. The address is similar to where we have Henry and with new family in 1851:

Michaell Kean 65, Stone Breacker, b. Ireland
Rossanna Kean 18, Cotton Carder, b. Lanarkshire
Henrey Kean 16, lab., b. Lanarkshire
Margret Kean 13, b. Lanarkshire

Address: Dalmarnock Road, Barony Glasgow

I recently applied for a copy of the marriage certificate of my great, grandfather, Samuel Harkins.  I knew he was married to Sarah Kane, but I wanted more detailed information.
This morning I came across your post, and there were the names of Sarah's parents as found on the marriage certificate.  Henry Kane and Mary McCallum.
My grandfather was the  son of Sarah and Samuel, James Harkins who married Jane (Jeannie) Logue.
This is just brilliant!
I would love to hear from you, and compare notes
Best regards
Wee Ann
