Hain/Haine/Hayne, Ball and associated Families - Stourpaine and surrounds
« on: Sunday 09 November 08 00:12 GMT (UK) »
Members of these familes seem to have lived in Stourpaine, Durweston, and other nearby villages in the mid 1700's to late 1800's. Hopefully there are still some descendants there today.
I am trying to eventually link all the Balls and all the Haines (which ever spelling) and would love to hear from anyone reseaching these, and any other associated families. Straight off the top of my head, other names are New, Ainsworth, Ferrett, Light, Coward, Cole, Read, Hill, Roberts, Kerley, etc.

PS Can someone tell me how you list the names you are researching at the bottom of your post??

Hi Janmoon

There are definately Haines still living in the area, the Balls are more over towards Shillingstone these days.

My brother in law has Haine in his tree... Rosanna Hayter Hain born 1839 in Stourpaine d/o Robert Hain & Annabella Couridge. From there I got stuck as the family seem to use both Hayter and Haine/Hayne, mind I haven't looked at this for over a year.

Jen

Oh! I forgot, I also have a froend who is related to the Cowards from Stourpaine.
Brickwalls... Dean in Brecknock, Freeman in Bedfordshire
Working on my girls tree...
Richer (Essex & suffolk)
Legg, Hunt, Ellis, Wareham (Dorset, Blandford & abouts)
Cannell , Cowley, Christian (Liverpool & Isle of Man)
Sherwood, Jeff/e, Bland, Sharrard (New forest)

Also interested in Paradise/Paradice in Gloucestershire

Trying to figure out the Davis family of Winterborne Abbas and where they originated (before about 1780)

Hello Jenfer  :)
Thanks for your response.
I have Haines that at some stage have used Hayter Haine,  and also Haine and Haines - it's frustrating and fun   :D  trying to sort them out. The immediate family Balls all ended up in South Wales or died in WW1, but I am still tracking cousins, etc. They seem to have  been married at some stage or another to about every other surname in the area.
Regards
Jan

Hi Jammoon

Have you ever found out why they seem to use both names, I've never found anything? I'm not sure if I got as far as checking down Dorchester so I'll have a peek when I go down tomorrow... Your names remind me of a school register, so many of them were in them when I was at school :0)

Will get back to you... what's your Hayter Haine/e connection?

My Haine link is Alice Haine, b 1869 Stourpaine and d 1948 Newport, Mon. She was my mother in law's mother. She was the daughter of David Hain (1826-1891 and Mary Ann Ainsworth. David was a son of Charles Hain b 1806 and Lucy (nee ferrett I think?) I think Charles was the son of John Hayne (b 1772) and Ann Ball (1771-1849). Alice Haine (b 1869) married Frank Ball (b 1862)
With regards to the Hayter/Hain, etc thing,  two of Frank and Alice's sons have Hain as their second name, I think because they married after the children were born. The other reason could be because someone Hayter female married someone male Hain - I have lots of family lines where a woman's maiden surname is used as a family second name - in my own family my great grandmother was a Cartwright, and there is a Cartwright (sometimes more) as a second name in every branch of every ensuing generation.
I have many lists of Haines (lots of spellings) and also Hayter Haines. I just haven't figured out where they all fit yet. The main places they come from so far are Durweston, Pimperne and Stourpaine.

Hi,
Firstly hi to Jenfer-dorset who pointed me in the direction of this website, Thanks

Hi Jan
I think I may have a few of the names you are researching in my tree, not sure if they will be of any help. Bellow is a brief description of how they are connected to me;

Daniel Haine b 1816 Durweston married Harriot (Not sure of maiden name, could be Paine) They had 5 children one being,
Eliza Haine, b 1849 Stourpaine d 1877 Blandford District, she married Julian Coward b 1845 Stourpaine, they had 2 children that I know of, one being Frederick Coward b 1870 Stourpaine, he married Emily Williams b 1870 Stourton Caundle, I am told they had 7 children but as yet I have only found 5, one of which was Dorthy Coward b 1902 Stourpaine, she married a Frank Turpin b 1892 Tarrant Hinton. Frank Turpin is my paternal Granfather.

I have other Haines, Cowards, and Domoneys

Regards
Andy
Turpin, Mantell, Triggle, and Shaddock of  Tarrant Hinton, Dorset. Coward, Stourpaine, Dorset.  Crook, Dyer, Kelsey, and Lemon of Hampshire and Wiltshire many around the Kings Somborne area.
