How this for a special deal!
« on: Sunday 09 November 08 09:07 GMT (UK) »
I saw an advert recently in the Your Family Magazine offering 25% off a subscription to the Origins Network so like a fool I signed up.

Yer right, you know that feeling that something is too good to be true - well this was it!  >:(

It was 25% off this month's payment (£6.71) and then £8.95 as normal off every other month of a yearly subscription.  That in my book does not equate to 25% off a subscription and needless to say I have cancelled the sub!   I emailed Origins complaining and have had no reply.  >:( >:( >:(

Hi Kerry,

I'm not getting a  reply from Origins either. I've been trying to e-mail them since 24th September but each month the payment is still deducted from my credit card, which is currently around $30 a month with the Australian dollar so low now.

I'm going to try to calling them tomorrow and will contacting my bank to block their deductions.

Please let me know if you do get a reply from them!

Hi Carla

Do you realise that as an Australian resident you can access the Origins Network (and quite a number of other licensed databases) online through  the National Library in Canberra for free. If you go to the link below and join. You get your card in the mail after about 5 days.

That's a bit sneaky Kerry, but it pays not to trust these deals.   :-\

Andy, I have the appropriate library card, but I can't find Origins on the site. Where have they hidden it? When I search "origins" dozens of pages of results come up. Can you help please?

Hi Carla

Neither did I until a couple of months ago. There are a some terrific databases such as the 19th Century British Newspapers. If you want to see what you will be able to access, go to http://www.nla.gov.au/app/eresources/list/licenced?sort_by=&sort_dir= which is a list of Licensed databases.

Hi Ruskie

I gather you found it from the link on the previous message.  I suspect that the NLA has a set number of licenses to access a couple of the databases as on the odd occasion I haven't been able to get in but can when I try later

Hi Andy, using your second link, I signed in with my library card details, found Origins, but cost and membership details are shown.

When I click on something, (Boyds for example) it asks for password and email address and says the page is only for Origins subscribers  :-\

What am I doing wrong? Or should I try later - as you say not all access is available all the time?

(Sorry to hi-jack your thread Kerry)
