Hi Dave ... heres the movements of 2/4th Battalion

Formed at Halifax in September 1914 as a home service ("second line") unit. Moved to Derbyshire.
1 March 1915 : attached to 186th Brigade in 62nd (2nd West Riding) Division. Moved to Thoresby Park (Ollerton) in May 1915. Moved in October 1915 to Retford, November 1915 to Newcastle, January 1916 to Salisbury Plain, June 1916 Halesworth, October 1916 to Bedford.

I've had another look and it says he embarked 18/5/1916 and joined 9th Battalion on 27/5/1916

His papers definitely said he went to (or presumably he arrived) in France 19/5/16.  (although there is also the date 1/4/1916 crossed out after that entry, and also another military history sheet there which says 1/4/1916)..so it is a bit confusing....but either way it was definitely 1916.  (2/4th was 1917 when he went back again).

He was injured (gunshot wound to left arm) 3/8/1916 (the date of 5/8/1916 is when it was entered on the report.
MODIFIED ... Oops sorry I can't count - that's august not july as I had in an earlier posting, so about a month after start of Battle of the Somme)

He left for England 6/8/1916.

DAVE - One of the later pages has him down as Sam Hall rather than Sydney (but with same number and occupation grocer.... was he known by a different name at all?

Milly is quite correct...The records state that he joined the 9th bn...

(Well done "old" padawan   ;D ;D ;D )

The date of injury is DIFFERENT to the date of reporting!!!

the gunshot wound to the left arm was received on 03.8.16 a few weeks into the Somme (it lasted until November), if the bn was there...

The injury was reported on the 5th... 8)

Hmmm...

The 2/4th bn joining date is 20.12.17....But added with his previous service with the 9th it would add up for his Overseas chevron would add up...

Right then... 52nd bde 17th Div were formed at Halifax. They moved overseas to St Omer  by 17th July 1915.

Now then, The Somme (a battle only engaged to relive the French at Verdun), the Div were in the battle for Delville Wood betwixt 1st and 12 th August...this is I suspect where the wound was received...

More on Delville Wood laters...

edit...
No, it's too late...:p

I will commend Nigel Caves excellent Book "Delville Wood" in the Somme series  Battleground Europe from Pen and Sword, this will explain in plenty of detail for you

Good luck with your search...I'd say the regimental archive is your best bet next - give them the date of injury and all the info regarding 9th battalion etc....and ask about the war diaries for around that day.... sometimes they can be quite enlightening...
