Found the info I had

The vicar of Duffield was "free and easy" late 1700-early 1800's and would marry "runaway"couples if they said they were from Duffield - no check was done to confirm where they came from

Also (but unsubstantiated) he married "poor" couples without asking for a fee.

One of my ancestors (from heanor) married (2nd marriage) in Duffield - she married her deceased husbands brother (who was a widower) - this was against the law -but the vicar of Duffield married them.
her burial record describes her as  "died with nathaniel but relict of Robert" !!!"

I just love these old descriptions!

off the point  - but I have a baptism which states "born Spring, baptised the day after the first stone of the chapel was laid " -of course that led me to doing a lot of research on the chapel !!!!!

Thanks, Suz. :)
It all brings it to life doesn't it! I've got a copy of the parish register for Rowley Regis, that I've just purchased. I couldn't find any ancestors on it, but it was worth the price just to read the little comments made by the vicar a the time. Some of them are on here:

Hope you, and Paul, enjoy it.

Thanks, Suz - just had a read.
Bit different to the story I came across a week or so ago about the Nottingham Baptist minsiter and his curate who had a punch up in the pulpit -  he was annoyed because the curate's sermons were getting a better response.
Wonderful, aren't they!
Lovely digression :)
Bye for now,
Paulene :)

The Walter Tinley who married Martha Brentnall is descended from the Tinleys of South Collingham.  I can provide full details if anyone is interested.
