Essex Regiment - WW1
« on: Tuesday 11 November 08 22:17 GMT (UK) »
Ephraim Warner was my 2xGt Uncle.
I was wondering whether anyone could tell me more about the circumstances (which battles he would have been involved in) around the time of his death?

Private Ephraim Warner 31487
1st Bn., Essex Regiment
Died 14th April 1917

Remembered on the Arras Memorial

Also, would there be any photographs taken of him?  I've got a bunch of photos of unknown soldiers in my room (a bit weird I know, but they were on ebay looking for a home) so would there be anything similar for Ephraim on file anywhere?  It's just sooo frustrating!  I have no idea what he looked like and would love to know.  Who would I need to contact regarding records of the Essex Regiment?

Many thanks

Emma ...

They were in action at Infantry Hill Monchy le Preux at this time as part of the Battle of Arras .......

didn't I send you the war diaries of what was happening that day ?

Hard to get photos I'm afraid ... they didn't have them taken for their file or anything !  :-\

You just have to keep looking for Essex regiment photos in the hopes he's on one !!

Hi Annie....I think you did...not sure what I've done with them though...will trawl through everything this aft!

It's just so frustrating knowing that he's out there somewhere, but not knowing exactly where!  He was the first Ancestor I knew about who was in WW1 (since transpires my Gt Grandfather on the other side was too, but I didn't know until recently!).

As he was involved in and around Arras, it'd be pretty safe to assume he was in the tunnels under the town at some time.  Was just curious as to whether he'd had a photo taken when he joined up or whether one might exist similar to the ones I have here of the other men.  Boswell, Batcheler and Figgest (he was rather dishy!) are all well and good, but they're not my Ephraim!!

You're just an old pack rat like me !!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I was going to say if you couldn't find them ... I'd get them again for you - do you still have the photos of the memorial ? ( though I have a feeling I may have deleted them recently when I was weeding out !!  :P )

I'll see if I can find somebody who may have photos of the battalion .... ( I don't know for sure though ... but I'll try !!  :D :D )

Yes ! ...... they are still finding bodies even 90 years later in different parts of the battlefields !  :'(

On one of your trips ... maybe you could walk that field and talk to him !
