I wonder if this death entry is connected to Margaret, mother:

1924   Margaret Jones/SUTHERLAND, age 83 in LEITH NORTH, EDINBURGH CITY, MIDLOTHIAN.  GROS Ref:685/10 0146

Would make her a young bride in 1860 but hopefully you can verify with the marriage/death certs for confirmation of parents etc.

could well be Monica......I see your magic wand is working overtime......I just don't know how you do it.....

thanks

A bit more....

Edward and Margaret certainly look to be a classic army family given the birth places of children. This looks to be Margaret in 1891 already in Leith with another son showing in the household:

Margaret Jones 53, washerwoman, b. North Ronaldshay, Orkney
John S Jones 19, son, Ordinary Seaman, b. East Indies, Camptce
John E Anderson 24, lodger
Elisabeth Curtis 16, lodger
T(J?)ohanna Curtis 23, lodger
Tohanna Fielde 23, lodger
John J A Field    1 Month, lodger

Address: Bathfield House, Leith

Will be hard to find Edward Snr. in the censuses by the look of it. Hopefully parent's info from his 1859 MC will help in finding his origins.

Ahh..but there I am stuck  ;D

Let us know if you view the relevant certs. for Margaret and Edward if you need any more help.

Taking my own advice, I've emailed SP re the death entry for Robert. I can't make out all the details re father Edward, it is Sergeant xxxxx RA., similar to how it written on Robert's MC.  Lets do a time trial on SP for responses to both our queries  ;)

Looking again at that 1883 MC, it looks like Edward Jones, Sergeant XXXX (the word I can't make out) Royal Artillery (where I thought it had a new married name for Margaret  :P), deceased and Margaret Jones, maiden name Sutherland!

Thats what I'm thinking too.....still trying to squint to see what the word after what we think sergeant is first thought it was 'service' then Feu?......what about fusilier abbreviated.......Fusilier was originally the name of a soldier armed ........what do you think?
