tracing information on STRAW family, Ilkeston

I am trying to find information on my gx3grandfather. Born Samuel Straw, Ilkeston Derbyshire about 1841-1849.
He immigrated to Australia in the mid 1860's working on coal mines in NSW and WA.
He married Sarah McNaughton in 1865 in Australia. They had 5 children - Ellen, Thomas Arthur, Andrew James, Annie and John Samuel. I know that thomas was born in NZ but was this because the family were over there. Or was this the time that Samuel and Sarah returned to England for three years to work in the coal mines of Derbyshire? Did they have any other children when they were back in England?
I have a few bits and pieces but would like to try and find more details to the events.
What ships did they travel on? What mines did Samuel work on as a child and before leaving england? Names of his parents and other siblings?
If anyone has any information no matter how small i would be very interested in hearing from you.

I have just discovered that Samuel age 65 and Sarah 62 returned to the UK from Sydney on 2  Jun 1906 on The Oratava. He is listed as a miner.I was rather hoping it might give his exact DOB....but it doesn't

PS Just looking for him on a census or two and find that ALL the Samuel Straws seem to have been born in Ilkeston!!! There is one with father called Thomas,who might be right,given that he and Sarah gave that name to their first son.

I think i did have the name of that ship. I was hoping for the one that samuel travelled to australia the first or second time.
I dont have easy access to the census but have printed this off for the next time i go to the state library.
i think thomas maybe his father as like you said that was the name of his first son (my gx2 grandfather as well as a great uncle and gx2 uncle). I know that it is extremely hard to locate the right straws. as we dont have many with that name here in australia i thought it would be an easy name. which i soon found out back in the time i am looking was quite a common name. especially samuel thomas and andrew.

When was Samuel and Sarah's son Thomas born?
Do you know if any of them came back to the UK at anytime?

In 1891 there is a family in Nottingham shire with Thomas(coalminer) age 34 born Ilkeston(on a trip home maybe?) and wife Mary A born in Oz........kids Maud 6 Ellen 4 Mabel 2 and Thomas 8 mths.

I wonder if that might be him? With a daughter Ellen named after his sister.

They are still here in 1901...with lots more kids  maybe that's why mum and dad came in 1906?

Hi Thomas was born in 1869 in New Zealand on the way back or to England.
Thomas married a Jessie Stewart and in 1906 was living in Western Australia with his family as well as his parents. I have come across another Thomas Straw in WA but can't make the connection. SO maybe he was a younger brother to Samuel - these are my thoughts or a cousin or nephew.
On my searches i also found a Emily Crimp Straw born in NZ 1869.

thankyou. I have come across the name Wheatley Straw in my research but as i didnt know Samuels parents I have never made the connection that maybe he was a brother. I will try this in my searches.

i have found out that Samuel's father was Thomas Straw (b. 1811) who married Ann JOHNSON(b.1812) date unknown.

if anyone has other children for this couple i would love to hear from you.

I wonder how far you got with this?
My ancestor was William Straw, Ilkeston Coal Miner.  His parents were Thomas and Fanny.  I believe William was the oldest - born in about 1831 (census info).  I have a further 11 children for Thomas who married first Fanny and then Ann.  William / Thomas / Harriet / Fanny / Samuel / Wheatly / Ellen / Hannah / Susan / Charles / Sarah / Arthur.  1841 census - Thomas & Fanny plus all children down to Fanny who is 3yrs.  1851 census Thomas is with Ann and all children down to Hannah who is 7mnths.
If you have any more info on Thomas and Fanny that would be great.
