Parents of Sarah ann Mansfield
« on: Thursday 13 November 08 05:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am looking for Robert  Mansfield b abt 1788 and his wife Sarah b abt 1792, parents of Sarah Ann Mansfield b 1833.

We have information about Sarah
b 1833 in Grays Parrish Thurrock.
Married in 1850 to William Robert Jewiss, Wedding certificate says she and her parents come from South Ockendon.

We have much information from there on in, but none of the Mansfields, can anyone help.

I see according to the 1841 census Robert and Sarah are down as born out of county.(don't know if you have census information)

I found the following marriage on Boyds index, but maybe a bit early, but could still just about be possible.

1812 / MANSFIELD  ROB / METCALF  SARA / COTTENHAM / CAMBRIDGESHIRE

Hi Sue,  thank you for jumping into this and giving it a go.  The only census info I have looked at in on ancestory.com and did not find anything that I recognised as belonging to these people.

I have been given a photocopy of a birth extract that states the ages of Robert and Sahah at their  daughters birth as 45 and 41. And her wedding certificate only gives their names and place of residence, so this is all we have to go with.

I have done searches for Saras' birth in online records and could not find it, nor her parents marriage. Now obviously this may not mean a lot, so anything found is great.

The marriage does sound a little early if born is 1788, but not 1782.
Michelle

I am confused, you say you have a copy of an extract of Sarahs birth. May I ask the source of this as its very unlikely you would find the parents ages on such a document.
As Sarah was born c1834, she was born before civil registration, and the best you can hope for is a baptism in the parish registers of wherever she was born.

I have found the Mansfield/Medcalf marriage on another source, so here are the full details

Robert Mansfield, bachelor of Swaffham Prior = minor
Sarah Medcalfe, spinster of Haddenham

4th December, 1812, by licence = Cottenham

Witnesses
Briggs Savidge
Thomas Haird

so being a minor, he would have been under 21 at marriage so probably not the right Robert. :'(

BUT then again his age seems to be all over the place, about 45ish in 1841 and 66 on death in 1848. Maybe no one was sure of his age in the later years, so ther still could be hope. ;D

Hi Sue,  it is a photocopy of something that looks official,  it has Parish of Grays Thurrock at the top, then collums with their names and ages and professions (starts with agl).  This copy has been emailed to me so it is difficult to read, I assumed it was some sort of birth notice, sounds like I could be wrong though.

I don't know what that could be then. Its not a copy of her actual baptism is it? though it doesn't sound it.
