Hi Dave,

I hadn't seen Gordon before as a girl's name. It could be a granny's maiden name though, so something to keep in mind for Alexanderina if she researches further back.

Been thinking about Ferrie/Ferries as Mary Jane's mother's name. I think this is her parents' marriage:

George Gibson mar. Isabella Pharaoh on 27th January 1854 at Arbroath

Mary Jane shows as born 1855 in Arbroath ... lots of info on that certificate, I'm sure. Just what we like to see.

Mary Jane shows as born 1855 in Arbroath

It seems Gordon on the 1881 census is Mary Jane's sister and the namesake of the daughter born 1897.

Following on from the previous info.  hume24 is correct about Mary Janes parents and info on IGI confirms Gordon Gibson was Mary Jane's sister.

"I have checked out some of the background of Isabella PHARAOH (that spelling was a good find by Hume24).
 
I looked up PHARAOH in Angus on the IGI.  It brings up various spellings including PHARAOH, PHAROAH, PHARO, PHAROH and FARROW.  However, it's quite interesting to look up the Arbroath and Montrose batches where the name occurs (don't think that Farrow occurred there).
 
There's a marriage of a John PHAROH to a Mary KNOWLES in Montrose in 1818.  And, before that, the birth of a son, Robert PHARO, to them in 1816 in Montrose.  I suspect that John & Mary are Isabella's parents (though I can't find her birth or births for any children other than Robert).
 
I say this because of an entry in the 1841 Angus census on FreeCEN.
 
In a household in Montrose of John PHARAOH, 44, Dyer, born Scotland but not in Angus (all others are born Angus) there's a Mary 43 (probably his wife) and several children including an Isabella aged 10.
 
It would be interesting to find John's actual birthplace in one or more later censuses. "
