Hi there,

I was wondering whether you could look up any of the Moore family buried at Newbattle. This would be really helpful as i am going for a trip to Scotland next month.
Many thanks
Clare

Hi Clare,

The only reference to a Moore is on  the Newtongrange War Memorial:

1914 - 1918
Archibald Moore GH

I am looking for a record of the burial site for Janet Stewart, who died in 1851 and i believe was buried in the"old" Newbattle churchyard.  Can you help me with this?  I am new to this site so don't know if I am doing this correctly.

Hi,

I can't find a record for a Janet Stewart d. 1851, she doesn't have a headstone and the records for other burials only start at 1855.

Was Stewart her maiden name or married name as many women are recorded using the maiden name. Any other details - husband or children which may help me see if there is a connection

cheers

Thanks for looking, Carol.  Janet Stewart's maiden name was Ramage.  Her husband's name was Lewis Stewart.  He was a miner and they lived in a place called Brewers Bush in the 1850s.  Most of the family left for the United States in the late 1860s but one daughter, Jane, stayed in Scotland.  We believe her married name was Jane Charleston and her husband's name was Adam.  They may have been buried in Newbattle after 1855.
