Hi Clare,

Re: FAIRGRIEVE

There are no headstones for Fairgrieve but there is three burial records:

Plot 12/57
Mary Fairgrieve aged 7, Hunterfield, interred 18/12/1886
Margaret Fairgrieve aged 4 moths, Hunterfield, interred 11/1/1898

Also in this plot are:
Jane Smith, aged 60, Castlehill interred 22/3/1873
Marion Young, aged 13 months, Hunterfield, interred 16/2/1887
William Young, aged 2, The Brewery, Borthwick, interred 24/8/1887

Robert Amos, aged 43, Dalkeith, interred 6/4/1902

Plot 12/58

Re: McLAREN

No headstone just a burial record for this one:

Plot 12/60
Ellen McLaren, aged 8, at Newtonloan Hospital, Cockpen, interred 23/3/1893

Included this one as Helen and Ellen are often interchanged.

Also with Ellen is:
Henry Mclaren, aged 2, Hunterfield, interred 17/12/1896

Also no headstone for this one:

Plot 12/17

Helen McLaren, aged 81, Hunterfield, interred 29/9/1916

And buried in the same plot are:
James Wilson, aged 51, Westhouses, interred 25/6/1868
Davidson, aged 3 hours, Gowkshill, interred 8/12/1871
John McLaren, aged 76, New Hunterfield, interred 10/6/1908

There is a headstone for a Thomas Mclaren who died 1905 (interred 5/9/1905) aged 78, his wife Helen Robb died 1878 aged 57 (interred 29/10/1879)

Quite a few others on the same headstone – will type that out if you think this is the Helen you were after.

No other Helen McLaren’s recorded in the book.

I have included those buried in the same plots for the others as I have found with my own family the others in the same plots are connected in some way as well.

Regards

Carol

Carol,

Thanks for the information on Jane Charleston.  It gives me more leads to follow.  Yes, I'm sure that Janet Ramage Stewart died June 15, 1851.  I believe that would have been after the 1851 census.  We were told that she is buried at Newbattle but in an unmarked grave and since it was before 1855 I guess there is no record of the exact site.  I had hoped that there might be some record of where unmarked graves were placed.  My sister and I are planning to visit the cemetery when we travel to Scotland this year.  The Jean Stewart that appears in the 1861 census would be Lewis Stewart's second wife that he married in March, 1852.  She and his children from both marriages except for Jane Charleston followed him to the United States in 1869 and she and Lewis are buried in a cemetery in Iowa.   Thank you for your help.  It's is really appreciated.

Judy

Many thanks for this Carol, it has given me a few leads to get on with.
I think there is some 3rd Great Grandparents in there which has been really helpful. If you have time i would also welcome the remainder of the names on Thomas McLaren.

Have both indexes and willing do to look-ups.

Elaine

Hi Elaine

I have just started and very new to this. I am trying to find out where my sister is buried.  I believe it is Newbattle Old Cemetery and was over 60 years ago.  Where can I go to find this information.  My mum is gravely ill and at 98 it is just a matter of time. My sister was called Mary Doyle and she died I believe a baby or toddler around early 1940.  Can you point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Helen
