« on: Friday 14 November 08 17:00 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am looking for any information on Abel or 'Abe' Layton born in Birmingham Warwickshire in 1891. He served in the East Yorkshire Regiment, service number: 14428 and was killed at Ypres on 5th May 1915. His father was Abel Layton (1853-1917) and mother was Mary Ann Hinson, born 1853.

Thanks.

Do you have his service record?

There are records (national Archives) which look like his.

Medals were to be sent to Mrs Edith layton, 309 Castle Boulevard , lenton Nottingham

His widow was awarded 10shillings a week from 17 jan 1916

Thank you Suz,

I too have found a marriage for Abel Layton to a miss Edith Scragg early 1915 in Lenton Nottingham (an Edith Scragg later married Leonard Johnson in Nottingham Sept 1916). Abel would only have been married a couple of months before his death. The new information is greatly appreciated. I will look at the National Archives Records.

Thanks again,

Philip1969.

Hi
Welcome to rootschat.  Just as a matter of interest wouldn't his widow have married again under the name Layton?    It might be worth checking your source of information for the second marriage.
If he was born Birmingham he might be this one in 1901 RG13 2858 F176 p21
Abel Layton 47 Builders lab b Worcs ?? Mathon??
Mary A 48 b Worcs Steckford?
George 21
Alfred Chas 19
Bertha 16
Edith E 15
Frank 14
Ada 12
Mary A 10
Abel 9  all b B'ham
Most of the kids appear to be working in the rolling mill but it is not very easy to read.

Thanks Andrea,

my mistake, it was Edith Layton nee Scragg that married Leonard Johnson, I found the maiden name given with the birth of their child Jack H. Johnson in Sept 1921. You are right about the Birmingham source you found, the Abel aged 9 is my great uncle who served and died in the Great War and his brother Frank 14 is my Grandfather. :)
