Royal Navy 1914-1918 Serviceman information please
« on: Friday 14 November 08 17:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have been given the following information taken from a medal:

K47167 F HODGEN FTO 2RN (the spacings might not be correct).

I presume it is for the Royal Navy and for the First World War.  I know Mr. HODGEN survived the First World War.

Any information relating to Mr. HODGEN, rank, ship(s) on which he served, service record, dates, references, etc., would be much appreciated.

What do the letters and numbers on the medal refer to?

Regards

Jeff

Here's his record to download

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=7224511&queryType=1&resultcount=1

K47617 is his number
FTO doesn't mean anything to me in this context, but the record will hopefully make it clearer
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

Thanks Patrish and Neil1821.

I've downloaded Francis' service record and it shows that he served on Victory II 1917-1918 and Satellite Sardi??? 1918 - 1919.

Any idea where I can find more details about these ships?

Regards

Jeff

Can you attach the service record to a post on here so we can see it?
It's just that it's so much easier to interpret when you can see the original rather than what someone thinks it says.  :)

Ah, that becomes clear anyway. It should read K47617 F HODGEN STO2 RN, ie Stoker 2nd Class, Royal Navy

Thanks Neil1821 and Patrish for your help.

I have found very little information regarding Victory II on Google.

Have you any idea what the name  of the other ship(s) he worked on.  It looks like Satellite Sardi??? and further down possibly Dispen??   Where can I find details of where the ships were stationed and if active where they were, are lists available for the ships complement.  Could you explain columns 'List' and 'No', and what does 'Traced War Gratuity By No. 57' mean?

Sorry, for asking many questions but this is the first time I've tried to find information about someone in the Royal Navy.  My usual area of research is parish and census records.

Regards

Jeff
