6 Darlington Place, Aberdeen
« on: Saturday 15 November 08 18:03 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me what this establishment was in 1881.
I have the Death Cert of Lewis Shand died 19 January 1881 at
?? Hall, 6 Darllington Place, Westnorth St, Aberdeen.  His son
signed the Death Cert William Shand, Son, Inmate.
Thanks

Not sure about the ref. to 'Hall', but this is the entry for 6 Darlington Place St Nicholas Aberdeen:

Jane Shand 43, head, b. Duffis, Morayshr
William Shand    21, blacksmith, b. Duffis, Morayshr
Robert Shand 19, miller, b. Elgin, Morayshr
Isabella Shand 18, b. Elgin, Morayshr
Helen Shand 17, b Fores, Morayshr
Lewis Shand 11, b. Old Abdn, Abdn
James Shand 8, b. St Nichs, Abdn
David Shand 6, b. St Nichs, Abdn

Another two families show at the same address, but look to simply be households rather than 'inmates' at an institution.

Seekthem

I've just remembered this - because I learnt something knew with the answer  ;D

The term 'inmate' was sometimes used on death certs. (the other post was also in the Aberdeen area so not sure if it was an Aberdeen custom) in respect of the person reporting the death and simply meant that they lived at the same address as the person who had died. Not the more common meaning that we mostly see used of 'inmate' implying that the person lived in some form of institution.

As you can see from the 1881 entry, I assume Lewis was the head of household and son William who shows on the census reported his father's death.

Monica,
Many thanks for that information.  I "assumed" ibecause of "inmate it must be some sort of establishment so I have also learned something new.
Thanks again.

I have also been puzzling over this on an Aberdeen death record from 1939.

Problem solved - thanks...

What a wonderful resource this website is  ;D
