War Diaries?
« on: Saturday 15 November 08 18:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I've just watched the BBC programme with Rolf Harris etc, can't remember the title :-[

They spoke about war diaries and so I had a look on the National Archives for info on the ones I would be interested in. It did however, give me a few questions.

The first one I want is for the 223rd Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery for April/May 1917. Are they available other than at Kew or are they too big?

The next I would like is a bit confusing for me. My gt uncle's CWGC entry gives his unit as 1st/4th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. Now do I need the 1st or the 4th as I can't find a combination?

The last one I need is for the 10th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment which appears to be nearly 3 yrs worth. Are they split up?

With regard to the last one, I've found out that somewhere there is a tape from the 1960's of two brothers talking about the Great War. On it they talk about how one of them spoke to his brother to tell him he was being invalided home and then less than an hour later this brother was killed when shrapnel blew his helmet back and broke his neck. I must be honest and say this was quite profound having listened to Rolf Harris saying lots of men used to wear the strap behind their heads for this exact reason.

Anyway, as always any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Ian

Hello Ian,

A war diary that covers several years could fill an entire box file. However, you can specify specific dates, or periods and get an estimate, by following the "Request this" link on the catalogue entry.

This is the page for 223 Brigade RFA:

You want 4th Btn, who were Territorials:

The only diary I have found for 4 Btn East Yorkshire, so far, is for their period in 39 Division.

As far as 10 Btn Worcesters goes, then my comment above applies, unless you have a couple of hundred pound to spare.  :)
