Help please all census! Canton, Cardiff JAMES family
« on: Friday 04 February 05 16:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi

could SKS please help me find out more about my great and great great grandfathers? From marriage cerificate of ggmother, I've found that my ggfather was BERNARD SAMUEL JAMES. an engine fitter of 36 Neath Road, Canton, Cardiff. His marriage certificate suggests he was born 1884, but as it's inaccurate for his wife, I guess this may also be a loose date.  He married Florence Spry in Canton on 2nd Jan 1910, and they went on to have Muriel Ann James born Nov 1911 in Penarth.

Bernard's father was FRANK COSLETT JAMES - and that's all I have...

Noone left on their side of the family to ask, so I'd appreciate any help with census listings etc, to identify these people and their families?

thanks very  much - it would mean alot to us if we can find out more.

Amanda

I have found the following JAMES family in the 1901 census index:

1901 census Canton, Glamorgan
JAMES, Lydia age 41, b 1860 Monmouth Blaina,
JAMES, Frank age 19, b 1882 Monmouth Newport, occ Beater Boy Paper Mills
JAMES, Bernard age 16, b 1885 Monmouth Newport, occ Paper Machinist Mills.

There are a number of other JAMES's, but no Frank senior. You will need to view the census page to see if Lydia is shown as a widow at this time.

I also looked for the SPRY's of Canton:

1901 census Canton, Glamorgan
SPRY, Thomas age 60, b 1841 Devon Ashwater, occ Furniture Broker
SPRY, Annie age 45, b 1856 Hants Portsmouth
SPRY, Florence age 14, b 1887 Glamorgan Cardiff
SPRY, William age 9, b 1892 Devon Sidmouth

Brilliant! I'll have to trace back to Frank senior, but I know that Bernard worked in the paper mills at some point in his life, so this looks really promising..thanks so much.

And yes, that's the right Spry family, I've managed to take them back to late 1700s

Ain't this a blast? :) thanks so much!!
