« on: Sunday 16 November 08 11:20 GMT (UK) »
What would "sponsors at baptism" mean please?

I have Charles Henry MITCHELL b. 16 Apr 1846, bp. 6 May 1846 "sponsors at baptism Henry Gilgao, Charles Mitchell, Jane Bullock"
Charles Henry's parents were Charles and Sarah Jane (nee Bullock).

Probably equivalent to 'godparents'.

In which church did this particular baptism take place?

The church name hasn't been included in the notes.
This would have been in Kent though, probably Dover area.

The reason I asked is that (I think) the word 'sponsor' is most usually used as an equivalent to 'godparent' in the Roman Catholic Church.

I have this family, and am VERY interested in anything more that you have on them.    I would very much like to correspond with anyone interested in this family and having more information.  I have lots of information and lots of dead-ends.  Thank you.

Charles Mitchell married to Sarah Jane Bullock on 25 Sept 1845 at St. Peter Port, Guernsey.
Charles parents:  Manual Mitchell of Crewkerne, Somerset and Mary Bargery.
Sarah Jane Bullock's parents:  Robert Bullock and Sophia Esther Bailey.  The Bullocks have connections to the West Indies and to Guernsey.

Children of Charles Mitchell and Sarah Jane Bullock:
George Mitchell, b 1849
William Mitchell, b 1859
Eva Jane Mitchell, b 1862
Thomas A Mitchell, b 1869
Emmalina Mitchell, b 1870
Edna Sophia Mitchell, b 1872

I have found the title "sponsor" recently in Cirencester parish baptism register (C of E) from the 1870s, and took it to mean godparent, as each girl had 2 female and 1 male sponsor and each boy had 2 male and 1 female, just as with godparents.

Debbie, I'll have to go and take a look as I haven't looked at the branch for a while as (bit complicated) it's my husband's brother-in-law's direct line.
Will get back to you asap =)
