Help needed - territorial force
« on: Sunday 16 November 08 11:42 GMT (UK) »
can anyone point me in the right direction?????
My grandmother's birth cert has 2 territorial force stamps on the back of it....one says 'received 1916 'and the other 'received 1918 '.  I'm taking this to mean that her father was in the territorials in essex....but where would I search for records ? I have no idea what regiment...Only that they lived in dovercourt at the time.......

Hi
You could post details on the ww1 part of this forum
His name and what it says on the TF stamps we can then check medal rolls and ancestry to see if his service records/Medal Cards still exist.

The lads had to prove they had kids for additional allowances. :)

Hi Koski1,
Like Ady says his records will be mixed in with other army regiments. If he served only in WW1 then his records would be at The National Archives, Kew. If he went on to serve in WW2 (as my grandfather did), or stayed in after 1922, then his records would be with Historical Disclosures in Glasgow.
As Ady said start with the Medal Rolls.
If you want to find a book which tells you more about the Territorial Army try:
The Territorial Army 1906 - 1940 by Peter Dennis, Royal Historical Society, 1987.
ISBN: 0861932080
Hope this helps - good luck!
Paulene :)
P.S. The family history magazines ran some articles around May this year on the Territorial Army. You might find they have back copies in your local library.

Hi again,
I can't remember whether Family History Monthly and Your Family Tree Magazine ran articles, but it's quite likely they did.
Practical Family History and Family Tree Magazine certainly did - if you do have trouble finding them send me a PM and I'll try to help.
Kind regards,
Paulene :)

Thanks Atom,

I'd missed the old site since it ran into problems a few weeks ago.
There is a thread on RC about it, but I can't find it at the moment.

The new layout is radically different, but I'll get used to it.  :D

One reason they would want to see her birth certificate for a second time would be if he was awarded a pension in 1918.

You should try and find his WW1 details on Ancestry while it is free - 8 days left.
