Family history Blyth Donkin
« on: Sunday 16 November 08 11:54 GMT (UK) »
Mygreat  grandmother was jane  Blyth . She was born in Edinburgh around 1831. She married William Donkin sometime around 1848/9 when her first son was born inDurham( this could be because William was a miner ?) Then they must have moved back to Airdrie near to Glasgow ( my mother always said her grandmother was from glasgow) where her next three children were born . her next six children were born in the potteries where William was from . cannot find any records for any of the children born in scotland, janes birth record or census info except that she may have been in service. no record of a marriage between her and William although on census they are shown as married- was it a marriage agreement or common law? lots of unanswered questions does anyone have any answers or ideas where I can look.I  am a member of ancestry

yes tried Scotlands People but the information does not go early enough to trace what happened to jane's parents ,death records only available after 1855. I may have a possible for jane's parents but Still cannot find any record of the childrens births in Airdrie . Or any marriage- in Potteries where William Comes from -In durham where the first child was born or in Scotland . Grrrrrr Frustraton !!!!!

Hi Blyth - If you're still keeping an eye on this thread, William and Jane Donkin were my G G Grandparents. I live in the potteries and I too have failed to find anything about Jane. Have you managed to find anything more in the last few years ?
William and Jane's son, Richard, was my G Grandfather. He had two daughters, Agnes and my Grandmother Jane Blyth.
In 1905, Richard emigrated to America to join his brother, David. They lived in Sebring, Ohio. In the 1910 census, they were living together in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
That's the last I can find of them.
Which of William and Jane's children are you descended from ?

Hi all,
Is this them in 1851, minus William?

1851 Scotland Census
Preston Links,
Prestonpans, East Lothian
Prestonpans/1/15/1/1044
John BLYTH, 59, Head, Coal Miner, born Liberton, Mid Lothian
Grizel Blyth, 57, Wife, born Inversark, Midlothian
Charles Blyth, 29, Son, Coal Miner, born Inversark
George Blyth, 13, Coal Miner, born Prestonpans
JANE Blyth, 20, Daug, born Liberton
James DUNCAN, 3, Grandson, born England
Grace Duncan, 2mths, Grand/Daug, born Archie, Lanarkshire
Charles Blyth, 11mths, Grandson, born Prestonpans

IGI has a Marriage of;
Jean BLYTH, Father JOHN
William DUNCAN,
31 December 1847, Prestonpans, East Lothian
Could it be mistranscribed???`

James DONKIN was Christened 12 October 1848, Lancaster, Durham to WILLIAM/JANE
Grace DUNCAN was Christened 14 January 1851, Prestonpans, East Lothian, Scotland to WILLIAM/JANE
(Source Familysearch.Org)

1861 Census James is born c 1849 Durham and Grace 1851, Airdrie, Scotland

I have looked for a James and Grace Duncan in 1861 and cant find any so looks to me they might be Donkin.
(to a Scottish Census taker and Marriage Registrar they might sound alike)

Trish :)

Hi Trish

That looks right  :)
I know Jane was 50 years old in the 1881 census and in the family, we know she was born in Edinburgh, so Liberton ties in with that.
Also, James and Grace are right.
The Donkin / Duncan thing would have been a very easy mistake for a registrar to make.
I'll have to try looking for Richard Duncan in America to see if the same thing happened there.

Thanks for your reply  :)

You are very welcome.
Blyth has not been on Rootschat since 2008 so if his/her email address is stil current they should get notification that this is reopened.

William and Janes Son William born c 1858, Scotland, according to the 1881 Census was Christened;
William Wilson Blyth DONKIN, 20 January 1858, New Monkland, Lanark, Scotland
Parents William DONKIN/Jane BLYTH
(IGI Extracted Record)

So a Wilson may fit into the Tree earlier.

Now this is the only Marriage to a Grizel I could find which looks good as in 1851 she says she is born Inversark;
John BLYTH
Grizel MILLER
11 November 1814, Inveresk With Musselburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

I think this is them in 1841 although Grizel is Grace and Jane is Jean;
1841 census
Prestonpans, East Lothian
Prestonpans/1/3/1130/...
John BLYTH, 45, Coal Miner
Grace Blyth, 45
John Blyth, 20, Coal M
Grace Blyth, 20, Coal M Lab
CHARLES Blyth, 15, Coal M Lab
William Blyth, 15, Coal M Lab
Robert Blyth, 14, Coal M Lab
David Blyth, 12, Caol M Lab
JEAN Blyth, 9
GEORGE Blyth, 3
Elizabeth HUNTER, 15, Coal M Lab
Charles and George match from 1851 Census also

Trish :)

Thanks again Trish.
I'm going to send a link to this page to my sister, Gaynor.
She is also doing research into our tree.
There could well be a reply from her later  :)
