WW1 cap badge
« on: Sunday 16 November 08 13:58 GMT (UK) »
Can you please help to identify this cap badge belonging to my grandfather c1916? I have enlarged it from the only picture we have of him. He was a resident of Manchester so I am guessing the Cheshire Regiment.

Hi Greg and welcome to Rootschat and the armed forces board. Would it be possible for you to repost the image only slightly smaller as it is too blurry to tell just what regiment that it would have been or post the picture that you have of your grandfather as there may also be clues as to when the photograph was taken, for instance the style of service cap or even type of pockets can tell some one roughly when it was taken. Also what was his name.

Looks likely to be Army Service Corps from that blur..! Deffo not Cheshires though...

But OR is quite correct...The whole pic is best...Context is all!!

Including his boots and even which way his puttees are wound!

I apologise for the blurry image. His name was arthur yates born in 1898 and claimed a war pension until the 1970's. I enclose a picture as you suggest. He is the one at the back.

There are a number of Arthur Yates in the pension records...

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&f7=arthur&f8=yates&=&rg_81004011__date=1898&rs_81004011__date=2&f14=&f15=cheshire&f5=&gskw=&prox=1&db=britisharmy&ti=5538&ti.si=0&gl=&gss=IMAGE&gst=&so=3

Perhaps you could have a dig for his address?

Anpestry is free for this month...
