How do I know if I have the right person?
« on: Sunday 16 November 08 14:37 GMT (UK) »
I am currently researching my cousins family tree. Her Great Grandfather Herbert Offer (known as Harry) was born in 1883 in Axbridge, Somerset, moved to Cardiff in 1902 and died in 1968 in Cardiff.  I have found a WWI Medal rolls index for a Herbert Offer serving in the Welsh Regiment - regiment no 202789.  Without knowing if he served in the forces or not is there a way of discovering if this record is for Herbert Offer on my tree ??

Hi

If you know the address of his family home in 1918/1919 you could try the absent voters section of the local electoral register.  If he was still serving, you might find which branch of the services he was serving with and his number.

Or if you have any birth marriage or death certificates around that time it may be recorded there !

I searched high and low for my Granddads regiment and number and out of the blue one day ... I was looking at my Grandmas death certificate and it was right there !! and had been there all the time !

So it's worth a look !

You could also wait until the service records for the Os are posted on Ancestry to see if his records survive. These will give his address and next of kin if they do.
