Bridgwater - Bridgewater
« on: Friday 04 February 05 19:03 GMT (UK) »
I am seeking the birth of Thomas Bridgwater born c1849, he married Louisa Barnes 1870 in Oxford and he died 1900 in Oxford. But I can not find the place of his birth with the Volumn and Page.

Any help would be great...

Cheers Lisa

Hi Lisa

I have just had a look through the transcripts of the 1851 census for Oxford city - and there is no Thomas Bridgewater of the correct age in them - there are 4 Thomas Bridgewaters aged 10, 15, 18 and 38 perhaps the age given on the 1881 census is incorrect??

sorry best I could do

Hi again

I found Louisa in the 1851 census -

Francis Barnes Head Mar  39 General Lab
Ann Barnes Wife 37
Jane BArnes 17 Serv
Ann Barnes 15 serv
Louisa barnes 2
Elizabeth Barnes 2m

all born Oxford - this was in St Aldgates parish so I took a look at the registers and found the marriage

Oct 30th 1870
Thomas Bridgewater FA bach whitesmith otp s/o William Bridgewater blacksmith (dec)   to
Louisa Barnes fa sp serv otp d/o Francis Barnes Boatbuilder

witnessed by John & Lydia Osman

In the burials - 14th August 1900
Thomas Bridgewater aged 51 of MArlborough Rd

so it seems that is his correct year of birth

I checked the 1851 census for a William Bridgewater who was a blacksmith with no luck

Are they spelling Bridgwater with or without the 'e' after 'g'?

I have the bridgwater address as being Marlborough Rd so that is the right man.

Thank you for you help.

Hi Lisa

FA = full age ie over 21
otp = of the parish
s/o = son of
sp = spinster - not married before
d/o = daughter of

at the wedding in 1870 BRIDGWATER (no E) , but there are entries spelt both ways in the same register which I think refer to the same family - so it dosn't mean much

you can buy copies of the transcripts on microfiche from the Oxfordshire family history society - they are also starting to produce some information on CD

 :) :) :)

Hi Lisa,

I have checked the births between 1845-1859 - and the only Thomas BRIDGEWATER was born in ABINGDON, Berkshire in 1845 -  Dec. Qtr 6 133

I checked the Censuses and see that Thomas always gave his birthplace as OXFORD, but Berkshire was sometimes listed together alongside Oxfordshire in those days.

As this entry was the only Thomas BRIDGEWATER in the time frame, I strongly suspect he could be your man.
