No James Pringle Philp with his parents in 1871
He may have emigrated before 1871 when he would have been c. 22 years old ?

Hi again,
Thanks for info...but think this James Pringle Philp can't be the right one! Those dates would put him as just coming up 14 when he married, here in NZ, Feb 1863!!
Also...I suspect he may have actually came here on the ship "Matoaka" which arrived in Lyttleton (Christchurch, NZ) December 1860, so therefore he wouldn't have shown on the 1861 Scottish census.
It's all a bit of a puzzle!
Cheers again,
Yvonne

Although this freely available data from geni.com suggests it is the correct James Pringle Philp, it does not indicate anything about Scottish roots.

Hi,
...and yes...this is where our family comes from! My late husband was a son of Herbert Sidney Whyte (From a 2nd, much later, marriage!)
The reason I think they originally came from Scotland is just based on a 2nd hand memory of him (late hubby) saying (way back!) that his Dad's parents had both come out from Scotland!!!
Not a lot to go on, huh??!
Cheers again,
Yvonne

My ancestors are John Campbell & Helen Philp, married 1757 in Dunfermline.
Although there are numerous Philps in Dunfermline prior to that date I am struggling
to  ascertain her parentage. Has anyone else been researching this couple?
The only clues I have are that one of the witnesses to the eldest three of
John Campbell & Helen Philp's children (1758, 1760 & 1764) was "John Philp, farmer, of Nether Beath".I would guess John was either Helen's father or brother.
I have viewed a few baptism of Philps in Dunfermline but none so far give a John resident at Nether Beath. I have found a John Philp who was a farmer at Pittencrieff, married to Agnes Brough/Burgh with children born there in 1730/40s. Could this be Helen's father?
Any suggestions welcome.
Thank you,
George

Hi

Has anyone come across a Margaret Philp who married James Williamson, grocer/merchant, in January 1779 at Kinross. I think I have all their children but do not know anything about Margaret such as her parents, date of birth and date of death. James married again in 1821 but I am not sure if it was his second or third marriage, he died in 1824 at Kirkcaldy and is buried in the old Kirkcaldy churchyard.

Any help with Margaret and her family would be appreciated.

Hi again,
Have made quite a bit of headway since I was in here last (though I still have no idea about the 'Pringle' bit in James's name!!)
But our James Philp (b. 1836, in Ceres, Fife) was a son of James (b. 1804) & Elizabeth (nee Thomson) Philp.
Said James (snr) was the younger son of Michael & Margaret (nee Anderson)...they had married Dec 1801 & just had the 2 boys. Michael later though, went on to re-marry an Agnes Ness mid 1815...but am blowed if I can find any record of a death for Margaret!
Has anyone got any info, or bright ideas, that could help me out here please?
Thanks,
Yvonne

I have come across the first Philp in my tree a Jane Philp born 1809 in Inverkeithing, Fife who married an Alexander Robertson in 1830 born in Dunfermaline.  I am researching the Robertson line.
Does anyone have Jane in their tree please or know of her ancestry such as parents?
Does anyone have Alexander Robertson in their tree as I have some gaps which I would like to fill if possible.
