I've recently found great grandfather's  WW1 pension records on ancestry.com but this is the only information (apart from his marriage cert) I've been able to find and I have hit a bit of a brick wall.

I live very close to the national archives in Kew and I was wondering if it was worth me going there to find out more about him?

If youve got his pension record youve got more than most!

I think the only other info you will be able to find will be the unit war diary which will tell you what they were up to but doubtful if he will get a mention unless he did something of note.

If you can post his details some of us may be able to add to the background of what you have.

Hi Ady,

His name is James Charles Scott, he was born about mid November in 1898 and he was married in August 1920 to Grace Lilian Irving. On the marriage certificate it says his father's name is James Charles Washington Scott and they were both dock labourers living in what was know then as Rotherhithe (Southwark now). I've ordered 3 birth certificates so far and they all been duds . I thought if I went to the national archives I might get a little more information.

Oh I did find his index medal card on ancestry.com as well.

Theres a lot of James scotts in Rotherhithe / Bermondsey, in 1901, but I cant match to the above 

Altho one of em is born c1860 Portsmouth, & married to a Sophia but no younger James with them ?

Thats the one Phil and I did find a Medal Index Card bizarrely and yes yes he was discharged due to sickness.

Newf I don't have a marriage certificate for his father but that is the birth certificate I have.

Here they are:

Birth 18th Oct 1898 - mother Sophia Bayn tonand father James Edward Scott
Birth 11th Sept 1900 - mother Eliza Mylnott and father John Scott
Birth 7th June 1897 - mother Eliza Dauncy and father Charles Gray Scott

All wrong month and the father's name is wrong too.

Athough  this:

has peaked my interest.
