Thank you that's great.  Not sure what you mean about 300dpi, I just reduced the original photo as I normally do when I want someone to help me.  I haven't a clue about the camera my husband used, the only thing is he bought a new one, which might be the reason the photos aren't so good for working on.

Please let me know what you mean so we can get it right next time.

Many thanks
Lizzie

Two extremes showing how the number of little dots that make up a pictures effect the clarity of the picture. 72 compared to 900 dots per inch.

Check the quality level of photos taken by your camera. You may be able to increase the dpi but have less pics on the camera.

This is the same picture just reuduced in dpi.

Thanks for that, I'll check the camera and tell advise my OH next time.

Lizzie

ps.  I was quite disappointed with many of the photos he took whilst we were following in my ancestors footsteps, I did think maybe he should have taken his "old" camera with us too.

Here you see the dots - this is the sort of view I used to repair the gravestones. So you can see if this was letters it would be more or less impossible to read.

Hi again

I opened both your photos and then enlarged them on screen to see the difference, it was amazing.  Now if only we'd known that before we went on our trip.  We can probably take the Joseph Hobson photo again as that was in Yorkshire and not that far (maybe an hour) from a friend who we visit in Derbyshire.  The other one was taken in Holbeach, Lincs and I doubt we'll go to that area again.  Also the Hobson was in much better condition as it was out of the way and was covered in leaf mould etc.   I was cleaning loads of gravestones when I came across it.  (I knew in which church graveyard it was supposed to be).

Try posting on the Lincs board, I bet somebody would go and get a pic for you. Especially if you can add a few directions.
