A form of punishment - No.2 F.P. !!
« on: Monday 17 November 08 17:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Me again - I seem to have got myself side-lined into the Great War!  ;)

I have a rather 'naughty boy' in my lot. On more than one occasion, for the crime of 'conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline' he was awarded 'No.2 F.P.'

Now, I'm guessing that FP might stand for, perhaps, Field Punishment.

Anyone know exactly what his punishment might have entailed? (I bet scrimnet does!)  :D

Here you are - from http://www.1914-1918.net/crime.htm

Field Punishment Number 1 consisted of the convicted man being shackled in irons and secured to a fixed object, often a gun wheel or similar. He could only be thus fixed for up to 2 hours in 24, and not for more than 3 days in 4, or for more than 21 days in his sentence. This punishment was often known as 'crucifixion' and due to its humiliating nature was viewed by many Tommies as unfair.

Field Punishment Number 2 was similar except the man was shackled but not fixed to anything. Both forms were carried out by the office of the Provost-Marshal, unless his unit was officially on the move when it would be carried out regimentally i.e. by his own unit.

Newf beat me to it ... I was going to say though I only knew #1 !!!!!!!  ::)

from The Riddles of Wipers by John Ivelaw-Chapman

Quote
This was another British army barbarity which was applied for any indiscipline short of 'Cowardice in the Face of the Enemy'. The loss of a weapon or ammunition, not obeying orders, persistent drunkeness, sleeping while on sentry duty and Absence without Leave; these were the misdemeanours that attracted Field Punishment No. 1. In addition to suffering long periods of pack drill and hard labour, the malefactor was tied by hands and feet to a post or gunwheel in an attitude of crucifiction for a period of up to 24 hours.'
