2nd Battalion Manchester Regt in WW1
« on: Tuesday 18 November 08 13:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone help please. Have  a Thomas Christopher Moran who was in the 2nd Battlion Manchester Regt in WW1. His number was 35782. Is there any way of knowing from this info which battalion he was in as there appears to be so many regiments within the battalion. We know from Kew records that he received the victory medal and the silver war badge. Also that he served at St Quentin in France. But he never spoke of his experience. Have enquired at Tameside Local Studies and they have kindly sent me info on the 2nt Battalion. Other than finding any surviving pension records is there no other way of pin pointing which regiment Thomas Moran served in? :-[

You seem a little confused here  :-\

His regiment was the Manchester Regiment.
His battalion was the 2nd Bn of that regiment

Soz!

2nd Battalion Manchester Regt in WW1. He was 35782 Thomas Christopher Moran. We know he served at St Quentin in France but never spoke of his exploits. What other records would be available apart from the evictory medal ans silver war badge he received? What different division would there be in the 2nd Battalion?
This is all the info I have given by a relative.

The info about the Victory Medal and SWB comes from his medal card I take it?
As a minimum he would have received the British War Medal as well.

Battalions were divided into companies, but for all practical purposes here you don't need to worry about any unit smaller than the battalion.

At the time of WW1, each regiment had several battalions. But the regiment wasn't an operational unit. Operationally, several battalions (from different regiments) made up a brigade and 2 or more brigades made up a division.

2nd Manchesters, for example, were part of 14th Brigade which were part of 5th Division till Dec 1915 and 32nd Division after that.
