NCO ranks of the Royal Flying Corps
« on: Wednesday 19 November 08 16:59 GMT (UK) »
I have the death certificate for my great grandfather who served with the Royal Flying Corps in WWI. It shows his rank as Corporal 1 A. D. What does  1 A. D. mean ? any ideas.
Thanks,
Brian

Means Number 1 Aircraft Depot - basically where aircraft were assembled and tested before being shipped to frontline units, after they had been despeatched by the factories.

For most of the war it was in St Omer.

kyt,
George Henry Furneaux was a tailor before going into the Royal Flying Corps. His war and Pension records do not seem to have survived, and little is known about his time in the forces. He died of Pneumonia, aged 35 in 1918. Thank you for helping.
Regards,
Brian

Hi Brian

as a tailor he may have been involved in the sewing side of the assembly and repair - most WW1 aircraft were canvas covered.

kyt,
Yes, I have been able to get his MIC card, it shows his medals were returned unclaimed. I know that many other ranks records were destroyed, but would have liked to have found them all the same. He is listed as C. H. Furneaux on the CWGC site, and I have been trying to prove his correct details, to amend his particulars.
Cheers,
Brian

Wont they accept the medal card? If all you are after is to amend the initial. What does it say on SDGW? That is available on Ancestry now I believe, but not free.

km1971,
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission will not accept the MIC Card as proof. I wish to get his full name recorded as well as his age and next of kin. They have been sent a copy of his death certificate, showing his regiment and number as well as his full name. Hopefully his details will be ammended.
I'm not sure what you mean by SDGW on Ancestry, although I am a subsciber, I cannot find it on their site.
Regards,
Brian
