Orphanage Records
« on: Friday 21 November 08 16:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Im hoping someone may be able to help me find a reference to Mabel Dorothy Morrison born in 1911 in Paul Petersburgh, KwaZulu-Natal I believe.  Later married to Francis Tucker.  Died 1987.

Hi

Apparently my grandmother Mabel Mabel Dorothy Morrison (born in 1911 in Paul Petersburgh, KwaZulu-Natal) was the youngest of around 5 children and was placed into an orpahange by her mother who took a dislike to her.

Does anyone have any ideas of where I can start to find any records relating to this.

Many thanks

Michelle

Hi Shella_n

Would suggest you try contact a branch of the Salvation Army in South Africa, they usually ran the childrens' homes, or unmarried mothers' homes etc.  Also, the Afrikaans separate society, who did the same, the name escapes me     :-\
Also, to help, Paulpietersburg, (correct spelling), in 1911 was located in Northern Natal.  Natal now known as Kwa-Zulu Natal.
Many Norwegian Lutheran missionaries used to, and still do live there, could they have been involved in helping orphans?
Try contacting St Thomas Lutheran Church, St Thomas Road, Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal, 4001?
Cheers

Hi there,
To my knowledge there is anot a Lutheran church in St Thomas road. There is St Olavs, a Norwegian Lutheran church originally, in St Thomas' Road.
St Thomas' in Musgrave road is the big Anglican Church.

Hi Shella_N  and  Rutti tutti  Ruth   :)

Apologies and thanks for that, it was St Olav's that my family and I used to attend, (to satisfy one side of our family), in St Thomas' Road, off Musgrave Road, Berea, Durban, which we Scandinavians colloquially referred to, 'as going to St. Thomas', hence the confusion.

Ruth, has this moved now?    ???

And Shella_n, I believe if you contact the Pastor there, and he seeks the help of the Pastor of the nearest, if not, in (used to be!) Norwegian Lutheran Church in Paulpietersburg, you will get the help you need.

Cheers   :)
