Hi Annie, you're probably right  ::) ::)  I wouldn't know an officer's air force uniform from army, completely ignorant of medals, ribbons, badges, but I'd probably know a sailor if I saw one  ;D ;D

Found his card, though:

James RADLEY
Brown's Hotel, Dover Street, W.  (how wonderfully raffish)
Nationality: British
Certificate taken on: Bleriot Monoplane
At Brooklands
Date: 14th June 1910

There are loads who are definitely not your guy, Emsworthy & Annie, but the more pics I look at, the more possibles there seem to be......  :(

What a shame there were no photos taken of all the guys at the time of enlistment, whichever force they joined ........

Kind regards
Gaie

Just read your last post, Annie, I might even print James's picture myself and stick him on the wall  ;)

Just a thought, is there any way of tracing him through that '45464' number?  Is that a regimental number/

Cor!  Ain't you two good?!

He is really reminding me of someone yet I can't think who.  It'd be wonderful if that number points us (notice the Royal 'we' I'm using here?!) in the right direction... ::) ;D

Well, I found four chappies listed in "UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919" who all had the regimental number 45464; but they're army, aren't they?

Joseph BROOKE, born ?,  died 17/11/1917, RDC, Theatre of War: Brough-Sic
James CUNNINGHAM, born Crossgar, Co Down, died 24/4/1915, RHA + RFA, ToW: Aldershot
Benjamin DAWES, born Wells, Norfolk, died 20/6/1918, RB (Prince Consort's Own) ToW: Aldershot
John WELFORD, born Auckland Park, Durham, died 29/3/1918, Durham LI, Tow: Aldershot

Thing is Gaie that most RFA transferred from the Army ... so the number could be Army or Air Force but I couldn't find one that included RFC !!  :-\ and on 1 April 1918 the RFC was amalgamated with the Royal Naval Air Service to form the Royal Air Force.

Thought this might be interesting .....

Gaie,

I'd seen John Welford in that list - think he caught my eye because of the Durham connection!  Do you think that the photo I've got here would be a copy of one that is in those albums?

I'm learning lots here Annie...and there I was on my way to bed!! ;D ::)
