Parish records for Templemore/Long Tower - help please?
« on: Saturday 22 November 08 22:59 GMT (UK) »
Hello - I am doing a tour of the counties here in my search for my ancestors!

A very kind rootschat person has just supplied me with the following details regarding my Great Grandfather PETER DUNNE and Great Grandmother BRIDGET AGNES DEVENNY/DEVANEY (?)

Married on 9 May 1894
Long Tower R.C. Church
Parish of Templemore
Londonderry

They were living in Belfast by the time of my Grandfather EDWARD JOSEPH DUNNE'S christening in St Patrick's 1897.

PETER DUNNE was a serving constable in the RIC in Belfast.

Am wondering where I should go now in terms of searching for records within this parish - possible christenings of children, any other related Dunnes and Devennys.  I've browsed through a few sites but feel as if I am floundering a bit - so many sites, so many charges and I know that some counties don't have much of their records on the internet.

Can anyone give me the benefit of their wisdom and experience please?

Thanks, Mary

hi Mary, If it's not possible for you to access the 1901 census as suggested by jcass, I would send for a photocopy of the 1894 civil marriage cert.

It would tell you his/her occupation, age , fathers name, residence at that time (but not if he was actually born there!!)
Witnesses names.

I think the occupation is the most important. (RIC or not?)Then the fathers name to look for a possible birth for Peter. (Patrick?)

Thanks - I know for sure that they were living in Belfast by 1897 when my Grandfather was born.  Getting hold of the civil marriage certificate sounds like a good idea - I didn't realise that it would name their fathers on it - that's really useful as you say.  Peter Dunne was definitely a serving constable in the RIC in 1897 - it would be interesting to see whether he was at his marriage. So I guess it's onto the PRONI website to download an application form and part with some cash!

Thanks for your help so far, Mary.

Try this link to application form from  Gro Ireland  for B.M.D.'s for ALL Ireland until 1922,  I feel the form is more user friendly than Groni.

6 euros for a photocopy
