Military Service
« on: Sunday 23 November 08 18:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi, i am sure others have tried to find relatives from WW1. Being new to this site some old answers will probably help. John Sedgwick born 1883 Preston served in the army. He did suffer a gas attach, but survived. I don't know his unit or army number. I have tried all the links on Ancestry, but no luck. I know it's a long shot but i have to try. Thanks REDJON.

Hello Redjon,

You've got your work cut.  :D

As far as Ancestry goes, all the Pension Records are allegedly online, so if you have worked through them and not found your man, then chances are he is not there.

The Service records have only been releases up to surnames beginning with N. You will have to wait until they release the S's, or view the records at Kew, to see if his record is amongst those that survived the Blitz.

There are about twenty Medal Index Cards for John Sedgwick (no middle names) and whittling those down is not going to be easy without any military info to go by. It will be possible to eliminate some of them, it just depends how many you are left with.

Phil Hi. I knew it was going to be a long haul, but i will wade through the medal cards & see what turns up. I did wonder what the local regiments might have been? Is there a site with this info? REDJON.

Try this one:

It's a bit hit and miss at the moment, due to refurbishment, but you won't find anything more comprehensive.

Don't rely too much on him being in a local regiment though.

Have you spoken to members of the family? Or asked about his medals?? That would be the best place to start...The medals would have name rank and number on rim or reverse...

Pictures are also extremely useful!

Scrimnet hello. Sorry to say no family from that generation left. I started this search about 3 years ago. The family never said much, at 72 i have only just found that John was married twice. Yours REDJON.

Oh blimey...I know the feeling...

I have tried for ages to find out about my grandfather....All my rellies are rather aged...My cousin is two years older than my father...Both my father and I were "surprise additions" shall we say! My dad died in August, and now I find that I am the youngest in my generation by about 35+ years (Much more with some)!!

My granddad enlisted in 1896, and I was lucky enough to be able to handle his attestation sheet at Kew...But it is all dry information...His Boer War medals are all missing, and so are any stories apart from one...

Scrimnet Hi. So we are both in the same boat. What we have to do is keep trying, something will turn up if we keep going.  If i find a good lead i will give you a call. Yours REDJON.    PS. At least we are missing nothing on TV.
