R.A.F World War1
« on: Sunday 23 November 08 21:19 GMT (UK) »
I'm doing a little research on the service of
119111 William Gladstone Dannatt
who enlisted in the RFC on 4.1.1918 for the duration of the war with 39 Sqd. He was later transferred to the R.A.F on 1.4.1918. He entered France on 7.11.18 until 3.8.19
I do have his service records, and there is not a lot to go on, but I am stuck with a few abbreviations that I need to sort out.

1. Can anyone give me any help on the following abbreviations?
2. Is there any information on  the www that  can explain what  39 Sqd was doing in ww1?

3.A.M = is this a 3rd class airman and would this be a rank of the R.F.C
Reclassified A.M/3 = ?????
Driver (LMN) = what does LNR stand for in trade classification ?
Driver (petrol) - ????

Thank you for any help you may be able to give :)

3.A.M = Third Class Air Mechanic (this was a rank rather than trade - trade could be anything including Armourer, Engine Fitters etc)

Reclassified A.M/3 = ????? Not sure why he should be reclassified, unless to a new trade

Driver (LMN) = what does LNR stand for in trade classification ? I dn't recognise this

Driver (petrol) - Qualified to drive motor transport. You could also get steam and electric drivers

Kyt
I have been looking at the service records again regarding driver(LNR). Maybe it was abbreviation for learner? I see I made a mistake in the first instance by inserting LMR instead of LNR. My mistake and sorry for any confusion ???
Thank you for the other information and the link for ace pilots. I will be having a look at that soon.
