Hi Jackie

I found a few more people for you to consider, and will put it all into chronological order -

1858  James Goldsworthy born Redruth, Cornwall.

1871  James appears on census, age 13, apprentice bootmaker, which tallies with your info that he was a bootmaker.

1889  David Noran Kenny b. Queensland to Kate Kenny, no father's name. Ref. C1508.  No marriage found for David Kenny, but found a marriage for David Goldsworthy to Mary Watson McLucas, Queensland 1917/C32.

1891  Kate Kenny born to Kate Kenny, Western Australia, father James no surname. Ref. 376.   Kate married Frank JOhnson, Queensland 1913/B14033.

1893  Lily Goldsworthy born Western Australia to Kate Kenny, father James no surname Ref. 354.  Lily Goldsworthy married Francis Elwyn Steptoe, Queensland 1915/C49.

1897  Thomas James Percy Kenny born to Kate Kenny, Queensland, no father's name given, Ref. C10624.  Thomas Kenny married Ann O'Connor Queensland 1923/B32551.

1905  James Goldsworthy, bootmaker, and Kate Goldsworthy appear on Electoral roll for Wide Bay, Gympie electorate, Queensland.

What is interesting here is that it appears James and Kate may have started out in Queensland, gone to Western Australia then back to Queensland.  That is, if the above info is verified by purchasing a few certificates, particularly the marriage certificates.

Hi,
It is worthwhile R-chatters reading the extracts in the newspaper concerning the crime of this man which was allegedly incest with his 25 year old daughter.

http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home

He was convicted with a sentence of 15 years.

Now, I don't know about sentences being shortened or reprieved in those days, but electoral role...

means he was out and about then. and
His child with KATE was born in 1897, He was convicted on 15th August 1896.

The 25 year old daughter, victim of the crime.  Wonder what her name was.

If he is having children with KATE in 1891, he was in Australia longer than he states in his profile, so an arrival in 1895 is not likely to be correct.

Lots of tricky ones in this tale! ;D

Hi Sue

There's something odd about the dates.  If he was convicted 1896, his 25-year old daughter would have been born about 1871 when James was only 13 years old!

Are you sure the article says she was 25 years old?  I must have a look at it.

Hi Diana,
No, I now see it was not she who was 25 years old but the daughter of another man tried and convicted on the same day for the same type of  crime.
The daughter of James is referred to as a girl and her age is not mentioned.
There are 3 articles in all over 3 days in the Brisbane Courier and it is a bit hard to follow in places.

+Hi Sue

I see what you mean. I had to read it a couple of times to realise there were 2 separate cases!  I could not find the third newspaper article, only 14 Aug and 15 Aug.

As you can see from a previous post of mine, James and Kate seem to have been in Qld, then W.A. then back to Qld. The 1895 date could mean when he came back to Qld.

For someone who got a sentence of 15 years, James was out rather quickly. Kate had a child in 1897!

James said in court he had a wife and 5 young children. I have only been able to find 4 children as per my earlier post, so there must still be another to find somewhere. I think Jackie needs to purchase a certificate or two to verify some of the information everyone has provided.
