Burnett/Youldon in Cape Town
« on: Monday 24 November 08 12:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi Lookers.
I have extended family in SOUTH AFRICA but most of my information is from other family trees.
Jeannette Burnett b.18.3.1883 in Ireland ,emigrated about 1912-1914 along with possibly Elizabeth Burnett b 1887 and her husband Matthew Massey.
Jeannett married Edwin Youldon on 1.6.1914 in Garden Pres Church,Capetown,
Family is as follows Edwin b 1915,Minerva b1917,Pamela b 1919 and Ronald b 1924.
The whole family travelled yo Britain in 1927 on board the LLANDAFF CASTLE to I presume visit Edwin,s parents in London.
I think Jeannet died in S.A IN 1971 but not confirmed.

Lots of gaps needed filled in and If anyone can help or direct me where to find information I would appreciate it. I am located in Ireland and Jeannett would have been my aunt.

Confirmation of who all travelled in the first place would be the first priority. and birth and death dates confirmed after would be second.
Cheers  Curley

Hi Curley

From the Pietermaritzburg Archives:

DEPOT     NAB
SOURCE    MSCE
REFERENCE 2924/1971
DESCRIPTION          YOULDON, JEANNETTE. (BORN BURNETT). BORN IN NORTHERN IRELAND. PRSP EDWIN YOULDON. NO TRACE. DECEASED ESTATE.
STARTING  19710000
ENDING    19760000

This would confirm the 1971 death date for Jeannette.

Seems Edwin died in 1942 in the (then) Transvaal (now Gauteng) Province based on this file in the Pretoria Archives:

DEPOT     TAB
SOURCE    MHG
REFERENCE 2535/42
DESCRIPTION          YOULDON, EDWIN.
STARTING  19420000
ENDING    19420000
REMARKS   SURVIVING SPOUSE JEANNETTE YOULDON (BORN BURNETT).

Regards
Moira

Hi Moira
Many thanks for your interest in my post and the confirmation of these death dates.
Elizabeth Massey, sister of Jeannette I think travelled to SA IN 1913 also with her husband. I have found the husband coming back to Ireland 1934,but travelling alone. I can only presume that she had died, or possibly divorced.
Is there any way of scanning for a possible death between say 1913-1934.
Information I have is as follows.
Elizabeth Anne Burnett ,b 1886 Northern Ireland, married Matthew Massey 1911 in Belfast. On the sailing listing of Matthew he is listed as a miner,if this helps in finding a location, also he boarded in Capetown. on the Arundel.
I know this is a tall order but any help would be most apprerciated.
Thanks again for your efforts so far

Hi All
Found an address for  Edwin and Jeanette Youldon  in May 1914.
As follows;
130 Hopkins Street, Bellevue St, Johannesburg, S A, This is listed on a sailing listing to New York in May 1914, By the way the wedding should read 6 January 1914
Hope this helps
Many thanks Curley

Hi Curley

I think that should read Bellevue East - which is a suburb close to the centre of Johannesburg.  I have marked Hopkins Road with a *.

Good morning Moira

Many thanks for the map,it gives the impression that we know a lot more about the family already, must google it to see what it looks like to.day.
Is there any hope of getting a reference number for the registration of Jeannette marriage,I would love to order a copy of the marriage certificate and hope it tells me for sure If the sisters went with her to S A, presuming that they attended the wedding.
Thanks again for your interest

Hi Curley,
I am Margaret, a granddaughter of Jeanette and Edwin, older daughter of Ron, their youngest son.
I did not know my grandfather, I was born in 1954, but I do know that at they had built a house at 27 St Patricks Rd Houghton Estate and had lived there for quite some time. My grandmother later retired to Sunny Cove (84 Simonstown Rd) near Fish Hoek in the Cape. We spent a lot of time with her there. Unfortunately my father died 3 and a half years ago so I cannot ask him any more questions, but my mother is still alive and lives nearby so I can get info from her. I do have copies of quite a few certificates which my Dad gave me shortly before his death, which I can dig out if they would help. All the Youldon children from that marriage have passed on, my father being the last to go.
There is so much to tell, it might be better if you were to ask specific questions, which I could try to answer.
Best regards,
Margaret

Hi Margaret -I am a descendant of Margretta Burnett who was your grandmothers next youngest sister. I have picked up from the threads and my research your linage and am interested in any history you may have. Ideally I would like a photograph of my great grandmother with her sisters/parents etc. Also it would be nice to know if Jeanette and Margretta kept in touch? Letters etc or just knowledge that they did. I can see some of the early family history of the Burnett girls but they disperse after their mother Minerva dies. It would be good to know how your grandmothers life went after this event up to her death in the 70’s. More than happy to receive or share information and happy to supply an email if that was appropriate.
Wishing you well
