Thompson of Redcar COMPLETED with many thanks
« on: Monday 24 November 08 20:49 GMT (UK) »
Looking for a marriage Ann or Annie Vincent to John or Johan Thompson.

1881 census Ann Thompson age 35 is a widow living Vine Cottage Kirkleatham, with children John T age 9 and Ann age 2.

Birthplace for all three given as Coatham, York.

Cannot find marriage of Ann Vincent and Johan Thompson, or death of John (Johan) on free bmd.

The Thompsons were of Danish descent and well known fishing family of Redcar.  Ann(ie) Thompson (the daughter1879) married my father's brother, 18 April 1901 St Peter's Church, Redcar.

Any help most appreciated.

Have just found the marriage entry, which confirms the date and place:

St. Peters Parish Church, Redcar
8th June 1869  John Thompson, 26 and Ann Vincent, 25
(no other details given)

Hope this helps,
Barbara

Have learned something! Didn't know reference number referred to the church.

It does help - at least I know they were in the Redcar area, also gives me their ages - something to work on.

Very many thanks

That's just the reference letters and numbers used on middlesbrough-indexes, not the GRO reference numbers though!

I looked for a burial for John at St. Peters but not found.

Do you need pre-1881 census for them?

Barbara

Hi Barbara,
Pre 1881 would be great.  1881 census shows only two children, John aged 9 (b c1871/2) and Ann aged 2 (b c1878/9), seems to be a big gap for the 1800's, however, if they married 1869 it would seem John was possibly the first born, unless there was one born soon after the marriage, perhaps shown on the 1871 census.

John Thompson (aka Johan) and Ann Vincent were my cousin's maternal grandparents, and we are trying to discover where the Danish root came in.

If he's there in 1871, hopefully it would show place of birth.

I had a look at the Middlesbrough index in the hope of picking up possible births of other Thompson children registered Guisborough, but there are so many of them it would be hard to say which - if any - belonged to John and Ann.

I've downloaded the form to send for a marriage certificate.

Many thanks

Margaret

Hi Margaret, not sure if this is the right couple in 1871, as Ann b. Bristol According to 1881 she was born Redcar   :-\ maybe better to wait for the marriage cert to show her father's name and occupation to be sure of her pre-1871
